Okay bear with me here ;) I can add this filter to my current set up to add extra filtration, right?

I have a simple DIY filter that I made from a rubbermaid tote that is fed from a pump inside my pond which sits on a cinder block (the pump also has a mesh bag over it which came with it) there is one tub connected to the pump that feeds the filter. The filter has two hoses that run back to the pond. One empties directly back to the pond and the other empties into a small waterfall basin that flows back into the pond. Hope I'm making sense here

My pond is only 500 gallons and off hand I don't remember the size of the pump (just giving you an idea what I'm working with here)

As long as you have an inlet open to attach a tube from the pre-filter to the pump it will work.
This is my pump:

I attach tubing to the input that sucks the water into the pump and attach another tube that goes to my falls.
I bought my prefilters here: http://www.webbsonline.com/Item/Matala-EZ-Bio-Mechanical-Pre-Filter-99990
They have a smaller size for smaller ponds too.

thanks jw, I was thinking more on the lines of adding to the already existing equipment without adding another pump but I'm not sure that can be done.

I get all confused when it comes to this stuff  I *think* I will need another pump to use this filter.

This matala filter (once hooked up to a pump) pulls the water in through the prefilter then through tubing to the pump and then out another tube correct?

Yep that will work and you described what it does perfect, just remove that slatted protective cover over the inlet pipe and stick the tubing on there whatever size it takes and attach the prefilter and voila you are in business. I stuck a few small rocks in the center core of the prefilter to weigh it down some and keep it staying where I wanted it better. Works perfect!

Good Job JW! Yesterday I had a headace all day long, think I ate too much peanut butter again. I love peanut butter but some days I go on a peanut butter streak and eat the whole jar!

Yes that will work, like JW says, take off that little pre filter and there should be a "maile" outlet and a hose should fit over that. I would not run the external box filter in the winter as it may freeze.
I would put the external filter away for the winter. Next summer you can run both.

This weekend is Thanksgiving for us Canadians, so I have to work again today on what was supposed to be my day off. Sure been selling lots of pumkin pies, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin bagles and pumpkin everything! The leaves are falling fast and hard, and I think it froze again last night and weather never said nothing about freezing. Got to dig that little tropical tree out today and save it...

I tried to save a young oak tree a squirrel planted in my garden. It had been there for about 3yrs and it was only about a foot or so tall. Man that thing had a tap root to china on it. It was under another tree so had to use a small metal weeding stick tool deal to try and weasel my way down to the bottom of the tap root. It might survive...........we shall see. Save that tropical one Colleen :)
