We usually have no frost after May 21, but sometimes on a warm year we can plant as early as 1st of May. The ponds have very little ice, thanks to my big heater, and my ponds are located between two houses so it is sheltered quite a bit plus we are located down in a valley and sheltered from winds too. I have not plugged the heater in for several days now, we are having a nice warm spell. The only pond that has ice is the bottom pond, cause that pond the water level is lower than the ice, as that pond runs non stop all year and keeps the top two ponds topped up to a constant level. This is why the ice melts quicker in the top two ponds, cause the water is at the same level as the ice.

last year our last frost was March and usually it is middle to late Feb..But everything surprises me here as last year we did not get a frost until middle Dec.So plants need more rest than they got this past winter .Buds on all the trees and that scares me because I never know whats next .

Every now and then we get a late frost and even snow after the trees have already leafed out. Then because the trees were leafed out the branches got too heavy with the snow on top, and they came crashing down all around my pond and yard. The trees did recovered in record quick time and resumed their evil plot to take over my yard!

Yes ha ha ha! It was a very nice day here too, just got back from the park, most of the roads are drying up now, and the snow and ice is mostly gone, except for the north side of the block. Currently 41 degrees fahrenheit, and warmer than Addy! :)

JW, your usually warmer that me by a few degrees if not more. How come it don't freeze really hard in Arlington, you must be close to the ocean?

Well we never had much of a winter this year, not too much excitement, weather has been very mild and that is nice for a change! Have not plugged in my pond for many days, maybe almost two weeks I think! Today I topped up the bottom pond and that made the ice melt really fast. It sure is nice to see the fish and know that they are all good. Spring is coming soon, soon no one will be interested in my winter thread. I see lots of people are starting new and exciting threads for spring, so I might let this thread drift off for the summer...... :)

Found this site that can explain it better than I can:

GEOGRAPHIC AND CLIMATIC FACTORS:

From about 13,500 to 15,000 years ago, the Vashon Glacier carved the landscape, dug Lake Washington and Puget Sound, while depositing
gravelly "till" soil.

The Pacific Ocean, Puget Sound, and Lake Washington all serve to moderate the temperature and affect the precipitation. The Olympic and Cascade Mountains affect the precipitation.

No region in the U.S., except Alaska, gets fewer heat units. The Puget Sound's cloudy, temperate conditions and level of rain are ideal for coniferous forests.
For 229 out of 365 days it is overcast, and for the latitude,
remarkably warm in winter and cool in summer. The low humidity during
periods of hot weather is also unusual, and a blessing. Annual rainfall
in Seattle averages some 32 to 37 inches. Sea-Tac averages 39 inches,
Bellingham 33 inches, and Olympia 52 inches.

Seattle's average annual temperature is about 53°F (11.7°C).

That sounds pretty nice, with the big lakes and the ocean, and a very interesting history too. Just have to watch out for the big quake and I here the experts talk about though..... Now I remember what it looks like in Seattle Washington, cause I saw it in the movies, Twilight the movie was based around Puget Sound and around that area if I remember correct. If it looks like the movie, must be really nice to live there JW! I read and saw the movies, except the last movie, will rent it when it soon when Shaw cable gets it. Next time I see Twilight I will think of you and your pond JW!

I got a dumb little head cold, have not had one for years, ran out of cod liver oil, must get some today in my travels.... hate being sick, still went to belly dancing class last night at the YMCA, and worked all day too! Ahhh, I see my coffee is just perked, that will make me feel better for sure!

Colleen my daughter was born in the small town of Forks,Washington over on the Olympic Peninsula where the majority of the Twilight movie was filmed. Funny thing when my daughter started getting her teeth she had an extra tooth in the front that looked just like a fang. Not kidding, and the dentist said it was just an extra baby tooth that would fall out by itself and it never did so we had to have it yanked. By then it had spoiled her other teeth and left them crooked so she had to have braces. This was back in 1969 way before the movie but we call her our little vampire baby now. I just gave her the tooth that we saved all those yrs ago the other day. Spooky stuff eh
