One year I keep my waterfall and canister filters going going into Dec., as my daughter was graduating from college and we were having company and it looked so pretty. Our canister filter ended up freezing and cracking, then the fittings were brittle from the cold and they broke too, when we tried to disconnect it :(

Colleen what is the temp in your greenhouse? Just wondering how cold those plants can take it? Thanks for showing us your snow covered ponds!
I have a fan heater on low and I have greenhouse insulated and walks and roof have about 2 inches of air inbeteen the walls. It's about 17 degrees right now. It gets nice and warm in daytime with sunshine.

Yes. Not a good idea to run External filters when it's really cold. Underwater pumps and filters work best in extreme cold.

I caught most of the guppies but some always manage to escape the net. There is two fish tank heaters and I am amazed the water was still warm. Covering with plastic and then a blanket overnight sure helps. Today is sunny and a little nicer so I will get out there and rescue some more of them.
I wanted to shut down that pond last month but it's so hard to find every last baby so I thought I would just keep fishing them as I find them.

I've found that healthy tropical fish in colder water temperatures are easier to catch. I recently caught about 30 catfish and tetras in water down to 10C and properly acclimated them to 25C water and all but 1 fish survived.
I decided not to heat our greenhouse as much this year, so I moved all fish inside.

I run my pond until the waterfalls freeze so much that the skimmer starts to straggle, then I turn the pump off, until the ice melts
I've always done this, even when my pond was a third of its size...last year was my first year with this size pond (roughly 3800gls) and the pump was only off for a couple of weeks
