Thanks Colleen and CE. The last 20 years has been good. Still deciding what I'm going to do for the next 20 years! Colleen that sounds neat about the ice crystals. CE at least you will be getting a day over 50. I don't think we have even had one or two days over 40 yet. It has been either 20's or 30's every day here for over a month and way below normal temps. My pond is totally iced over again and has been that way for over a week now.

It got up to 53 here, sunny and light wind. Could not have asked for a more beautiful spring day. But, wait, tomorrow it's supposed to dump anywhere from 4-12" of snow on us! Really????? Come on, this back and forth crap is killing me. At least I don't have any ice on my ponds as of this afternoon. The fish were enjoying the sunshine, saw a fish I'm not sure who it is! Must be one I bought a year ago in December, had in basement pond, and has changed color patterns somewhat. OR, it's a 5th baby from last year.

okay, I finally plugged my water pump back in over the weekend. it had totally stopped working during one of the sub freezing days in the winter. It started right up. YEA!!!!!!!!!! So I started my waterfall with it to get the water moving more. I am including some pictures of the still mostly frozen pond and some neat ice crystals that I chopped out of the top of the pond. Oh and the last one of the front of my car after I drove through the winter storm in Central Illinois last weekend. I never saw so many stranded cars on the side of the highway that were in ditches. Probably at least 50 cars veered off the road!

I don't have a thermometer on my ponds, need to get them out this weekend, as hearing others say their pond temps are in the 50's shocks me, as they live in the same area as me as far as midwest! Glad your pump works fine, Keith. My big 4200 shut down everytime the water froze in the water line, and started back up each time. It must have an auto shut off when too much pressure. Going to wrap my water line that is above water so maybe it won't freeze next year. We shall see ...

II use the pipe wrap on mine where they are out of water ,but we really don't get that cold here for long .I saw the weather channel this morning good gosh rain ,softball sized hail and tornado in Texas and police cars and windows broke out and then farther down south heavy rains and severe weather.Called mike told him not to pay mortgage this month to me and to get caught up on his other bills instead .Figured it would be a spring gift for them .

I used nothing to insulate my hoses, they never freeze as the water moves fast enough inside the hoses. If your water does not move fast inside the hose then it can freeze. You can switch the size of the hose and make it smaller and then the pressure inside the hose will be faster and the water will flow faster. Also you need a good size filter to run all winter, not the filter that the pump comes with, as those filters are junk in almost all cases and they clog up too much over the winter. :)

Good going Keith! I scored a good deal yesterday on a pond pump. Was out walking and somebody w/their home up for sale threw a pump out by their garbage cans and so hauled it home and it works yay! One can always find a use for an extra pump or two or three.........Looks like a Pondmaster type one and that's what I have now and mine has been going for many yrs solid!

Colleen, I have 1.25" water line, and a 4200 gph pump that was running about 20' of water line to the Skippy filter. For some reason, the pump kept quitting. I figured it was the water in the line froze, as it was above ground on the outside edge of the waterfall ground area. Maybe it was something totally different, but never had a problem with the pump running before, and it did it each and every time the temps plummeted below freezing for day and night for more than a day. So, we shall see if the insulation will help keep them from freezing. Plus, the lines will be more underground in a sense, and that may help, too. I'll be shutting down the tee'd line to the fountain for the winter, so it should push water only through the Skippy. Also, I don't even use a filter for that pump, never have. It is strong enough to push pretty good sized stuff through it, so I see no need to put a filter on it. It's up off the bottom of the pond, about 16" so the only thing that runs through it is the water for the most part. There is some plant stems on the outside of the cage right now, but other than that, it doesn't get clogged.
The pump I used to push water in a fountain type thing for the goldfish pond kept getting clogged because I had the filter in the cage. Once I removed it, it never quit. That one is also up off the bottom, in the pond, and no reason for it to get clogged, as the water got into the pump and just straight out and up to the surface, causing a bubbling effect.

Must have froze first in the skippy filter, I don't have a skippy filter, but if it is outside of the pond I imagine it would freeze cause the water volume would slow down inside a big (above water) filter. My filters are all in under the water, before the pump, and the hoses just go up out of the water to the next pond, hidden under rocks and wood. I thought you had a filter before the pump, my mistake, sorry. :)

Yep, it's at the top of the waterfall. So, that settles it. I'll shut off the Skippy for winter, not worry about running that, but keep the water running over the waterfall just pumping the water into the pool at the bottom and letting it flow over. That at least keeps more water movement. Going to see if there is any difference with algae once the water warms up with the warmer temps we are finally getting now! If I have less algae, then I'm going to assume keeping the bogs, stream and waterfall running have helped with that problem. First it has to warm up for the algae to TRY to start up! Nothing is growing to use up the nutrients yet, lilies just getting a few leaves underwater, but the irises and dwarf cattails are starting to sprout so hoping soon they will be taking off and growing well.

You thawing out now Keith? Should be all starting to warm up soon for you I would think. Looks like Spring here now but still a chill in the air. I noticed my banana tree is starting to grow now so I better get out there and trim the dead stuff off to make it look presentable.
