Tmann, great info. I was thinking of re-potting mine to help it grow, but maybe I should rethink that and try to keep it stunted. It has a pretty heavy root system that sticks out of the bottom of the pot by about 10 inches. CE we both have pond cypress which is a much smaller tree than the bald cypress. The problem with mine is its always falling over so yesterday I loaded up the pot with pea gravel and moved it so it doesn't catch as much wind. People always ask me how I have a tree in my pond. I think they think it goes into the ground! I looked up the dawn redwood. It looks like it could be another good pond tree. Tmann do you have a picture of your dawn redwood?

Very interesting, never though of a pond cypress before, looks good Tmann, reminds me of the trees in the Cypress Hills, not to far from town, there's this little lake called "spruce coulee" that has spruce trees that grow right into the water there. It's a really pretty lake, no motor boats allowed there. Your pond kinda reminds me of that lake, look real nice!

Comet here are a few pics. This is one of my favorite trees, it was thought to be extinct but was found in china back in the 40's and seeds were brought from there and propogated here. This tree is about 8 years old and the last several years has really taken off. Does well in wet areas. It is unique in that it will lose all its leaves in the fall, they turn a rust/brown color and then fall off, so don't think the tree is dead and cut it down. The last pic is a closeup of the bark/trunk which I think has so much character.

Very neat looking tree, Tmann! I have an area where my septic must drain, as it stays wet most of the time. Was thinking of a weeping willow, but that tree is far neater in appearance. I need to check into one. Where did you get your tree? Are they hardy for my Zone 5? Just wondering if there is a good place to find one to purchase.

Country it should be hardy in your area, because last year they had them at a local nursery by me and I almost got one because they looked so cool and like Todd said the leaves turn color in fall. They had 3 of them, but the $100 price tag kept me away, but I haven't seen them there since and now wish I had gotten one. Yours looks great Todd!

Holy cow, $100?! That's out of my price range, but then I'm the type to see that, and then search on the internet to find another source for them .... much cheaper. Problem is that cheaper is most often not better, but sometimes you get lucky. That may be a project for next year, putting it on my "to do" list for 2013. :)

The Dawn Redwood is a beautiful tree and my neighbor who moved here from California has one in her backyard and every year at the start of Spring she asks me if this tree is dead,lol...................she forgets what I tell her each year about all her plants. It does come back nicely each year and looks so pretty. I need one too!

It was at a garden center so they are usually higher, but will be the ones to have the exotics. The trees were probably 5-6' tall though, so that could definitely play a part in the price. I did find them in 1 gallon pots about 12-15" tall on ebay for about $10 each or so with shipping. Still might have enjoyed having the larger one for the higher cost because it would be bigger. I like the idea though that they like water, hopefully they can then handle all the clay I have, I'm sure it has stunted the growth of my white pines.

I bought mine from a nursery around here. However I have found this web site that sells the seedlings for a decent price, you can get 3 for $12 or 10 for $35. They grow quite fast though. I am thinking of getting some of these to make bonsai out of...

I have some kind of Sequoia that my neighbor gave me when it was just a foot or so tall. Don't know the variety or how big it will get. It's about 6' tall now. It is evergreen. Anybody know what variety it is:

Thanks Tmann, I was thinking that might be it so I planted it where it can grow big and not bother anything just in case. They get humongous! But I prolly won't live that long to see it get that big!

It's on the side of the road at the end of our cul de sac and if it ever gets that big it will be in the days of my great, great, great, great grandchildren I'm thinking! I been down to the Redwoods in California and seen trees that big. Wonder how fast they grow?
