sorry to hear that and maybe you should put in a doggie door for Mr Buttons or do you have one and he was still snoozing .I have heard people putting those dog barking sensors up ,not sure where the bought them but heard a couple people talking about them on you tube and showing how they work for raccoons and cats not sure about herons

They are cheap, easy to build, and easy to remove. I have not lost a Koi since building these 3 years ago. I see evidence that raccoons have walked on them at night with no losses.

By far this is the most effective way to keep Herons out! Not the prettiest look but VERY effective! It gets to looking better as time goes by and all you fish are still there and growing bigger! I did paint my PVC camouflage in color that help satisfy me some.
Last night I kept hearing a weird sound in the back yard, I thought it might be my new frogs but I finally got up and looked just about the time my driveway sensors went off,
grabbed the .22 and low and behold the biggest raccoon I have ever seen was standing on the wire trying to get the fish! I popped him in the butt with the pellet gun and WOW, they can sure run fast! HAHAHALOL:nananananana: That sucker jumped the fence and was still making noises long after I lost sight, Did my head count this morning and all still accounted for. I can now say, Building the covers were well worth the money spent and the time and effort to build!
BTW, this is the first Raccoon I have seen near my pond in the 8+ years I have been living here! Never seen one in the neighbor hood at all before last night! Mine were built to protect against bird attacks, herons and owls seem to be my worst problems!

22 Caliber CB rounds, quieter than a pellet gun, more lethal. 900 FPS Muzzel velocity. Not much danger to anything over 300 feet away.

I had a dream last night that the heron were getting my fish so today I set my talk radio on the porch right by the pond to come on loud dawn to dark. Must be all this reading about people's fish getting eaten lately. Also yesterday they were very skittish like they were afraid of something when I came near to feed them and they are not like that at all. I also noticed a slight straight line of a scrape on both sides of one of the largest fish. Maybe could have gotten bit by Mr Heron or maybe just a co-incidence from something else, who knows. I can't see how a heron could get in there to get any but they are sneaky buggers ;)

Man, I feel for you!! I got hit about two weeks now and the heron got five of my most tame one's before they relized what was going on,they have been skittish every since.
I ended up stringing netting over it and decided I did'nt like it so I did the fishing line and tyed some shiny ribbon every couple feet. I was so pissed when it happened!

I'd find out if they taste like chicken if I could just catch the blink'in thing. After all it should be good and fat after eating all that fine fish outta my pond.

Feeling everyone's pain. I lost five fish yesterday and one today. I don't have any netting yet, but will be ordering some shortly. I just don't like the look of it, but doesn't seem like there is much else you can do. I will also string fishing line on the section the heron likes to hunt in. My fish are all scared now and acting super skittish. Its really sad because the bird taking my fish is a bird I used to love watching - until I got a pond!

I will try the talk radio as well.

Forget the talk radio as I had to resort to the net now. Not bad at all and you can hardly see it. I like that it's up high so I can get under it easy by just lifting it up. Seems as tho I am posting net pictures a lot lately. The birds must be getting really active and hungry seeing all our ponds.

Thanks the black color makes it almost invisible to the eye, at least not real intrusive. Jw used a more slender thread then my netting, even less visible. I have some of what she used over my subbie tank, it has been frozen, snowed on, iced up and holding up beautifully. My larger netting, i.e. the thread size, has tended to sink down some with the snow and ice load. But it bounces right back up.

The radio seemed to be working for years since I first notice the heron coming around but Gordy after awhile there came to be a heron recently that did not mind the noise. Maybe it's deaf or just so darn hungry it didn't care but now that this new net is up I can dream good dreams about my fish being safe. Will never be w/o a net again.
