yes, you're still okay. But a tip to others, that you don't need to glue the pipes/elbows in the barrels (as there is no risk of leaking IN a barrel), so you can make adjustments or remove for cleaning.

just a warning if you use that green funrace material, i had it in a filter in my moms pond and it broke down and started to float out of the filter and into the pond.

Bsr, I'm currently using the green furnace material from Home Depot in my boi- filter's third layer of filter material. I put it in last summer when I built my DIY boi-filter, and it seems to be holding up so far. Maybe because it is sandwiched between two other filter pads.

Happy ponding.

that may be why, i used it as the bottom layer followed by scrubbies and it didnt seem to work for me, maybe if its the bottom layer it falls apart with the turbulance or something

I would try using up to three different courses of filter material, the most course on top and the finest on the bottom. Between Home Depot, Lowe's, and your local pond supply, a variety of different types of filter mediums can be found and utilized for filtering your pond water in a variety of applications.

I love this 'do it yourself' (DIY) stuff, you can get quite creative with some shopping around and some good old fashioned creativity.

Happy ponding,

I am building this set up I found on the net. I bought 4- 55 gallon barrels for $100.
First one is mechanical, second is biological and minor fines.

Two of them I cut in half longways for my aquaponic garden.

Koiguy, Thanks for clearifying that. My boi-filter happens to be a 27 gallon, trickle down type boi-filter, and so far I am quite happy with the results I'm getting. The only thing I'm doing different this year is, I didn't attach and run the water through the UV clearifier from Lowe's.

Happy ponding,
