You're getting there! More waterlilies would help provide shade over the water in the hot summer too which helps lesson the algae.

I have potted and non potted iris, bog bean and cat tails. The potted ones do better (in kitty clay) but they will do fine just stuck in rocks around the edge of your pond.
I have 4 leaf water clover, grows great, survived our winter so far. There is around 6 inches or so of water over the plant. I have rush growing just in the water also and in the bog.

Thanks addy, sounds like I'm getting the right plants, just need more of them. The lady i got them from also had dwarf lilies, but I think maybe my water isn't still enough for them. They don't like moving water, right? Oh and I need to get me a gator! , LOL

They don't mind moving water, they don't like their leaves splashed. I have some right next to my water fall, they do fine. Also one in the preform where the water moves constantly, not a real strong current, but constant.

Oh good, might just get a couple of hers then. You were saying you put plant tabs in them, plus osmocote in the pan? How do you have yours planted?I'll probably bug you a lot, we are in the same zone, I think :)

K, I have an idea and wanted your input please? I have a shelf on the one corner that could prolly hold either a small preform or maybe on of those small pans like you mix cement in. My thought is something like that with pea gravel in it, to put the dwarf cattails, and some other plants in for water filtration? I could nestle some potted plants in it, too. This would be under the water so the fish can swim thru it, and hopefully be fine when the pond freezes over? I keep on end open in the winter, but this corner will freeze over? I'm thinking this to keep the gravel confined to one area

Nice hb you're in your way to having a bog inside your pond! :) Every plant you add will help with filtering and algae! Is it possible for you to use some sort of waterfall weir that you could hide with river rock or flagstone? It wouldn't take up too much room and you could use it for a bog of sorts to put plants in :) just a thought lol

tank adapter from pet mountain and others from lowes .I have the bigger tank adapter but you would need the smaller one .The T part is for water coming in the top and the T pulls the water back out from near the bottom of the tank .You have to use a hole saw bit on a drill to make the right sized hole for the tank adapter to fit tight and then a tube of silicon to make it water tight.I like the pet mountain adapter because the back that goes in the tank is nice and long .You can reverse it also and put that end out /

Hi FL, thank you :) That would probably work, too. This whole thing will be under the water so was hoping the plants that have floating stems, would sorta hide the container until of course it turns green, LOL. the shelf is kinda in the shape of a triangle, so that' what made me think of a small pre form. Just hope that won't be too deep that the edges stick up above the warer level. Then I would need your weir idea. One my way to search, with measurements in hand :)

K, I think the light bulb finally came on! LOL so there's sediment area in the bottom, then a grate or something to hold the media from going all the way down. The tee and tank adapter, and I think this might be the same thing as a bulkhead, is right above the grate. the water comes in from the top, and flows down thru media and out the outflow. sounds like a plan, thank you!! the pics helped :)

my new tank I got is oval so more room for planting or letting floaters float in it to help clean the water .I will be using 2 tank adapters on this tank and upping the flow of water to it since it is bigger than the plantainer I got from lowes .The only thing with round tanks you need a smaller adapter so it sits flat when installed and the best price I could find was pet mountain .com and free shipping on holidays if you buy 49 dollars of stuff .

thank you so much sissy :) I think I have it right now. Hopefully I can use the old tote that I thried before. Hubby had put a spigot down close to the bottom to drain it, but I have a shower drain type thing up near the top where origially the water came out. Guess this could act as a overflow or can block it somehow. I'll just try using this for the reast of this season, then come spring get a nicer looking container, like the half whisky barrel w/liner or who knows, LOL

Yes, when I make the next one that is a thought, because it would be nice to have the floaters or plants. I'm hoping I can find an adapter the size I need:)

The new tank I got is 3ft. wide and 4 ft. long and 2 feet deep so hoping I have lots of room for floaters to help keep the water clean .I will be putting in 3 tank adapters i think ,but going to start with 2 .You would need the smaller tank adapter .
