We used to feed our fish at the same edge of the pond for a couple of years so same thing when the Herons would walk up to the side of the pond the fish would all congragate at the feeding spot, not realizing they were the feed. We now throw the food out to the middle of the pond.

geez swimming! towards me. Anytime they get food I always toss way out into the center of the pond.
I used to have a floating island, the heron learned to land on it and snack on the fish.
