Sounds like the Canada geese here. They went from being almost extinct to becoming a real nuisance. Try to get them to leave now. Many of them don't even migrate anymore - they just hang around all year making a mess out of small ponds and waterways. They are delicious though...

Those bad iguana's! What can you do? (n)
:woot: How about building a large structure over the pond that would help shade it, and put chicken wire on the structure and build a little gate and enough room for a bench and then sit inside and enjoy the shade and stick your tongue out at them while you sit and relax and enjoy a cocktail! Hey, you could also just look around for a large Gazebo with a screen net and place that over the pond too!

IGUANA EN PINOL

1 Iguana - female (have no idea how to determine that)
3 sour oranges (acid)
1 garlic bulb
4 lg. onions
1 tsp. black pepper (grain)
12 c. water
1 lb. dry corn (powdered)
1 tsp. REO PEPPER
3/4 bottle of pork grease
Salt to taste
The first day:
After the Iguana has been killed, open the stomach and remove the eggs and intestines. Clean the eggs very well with the sour oranges. Put the eggs in the arms with the Iguana in all its skin.
Later in the day cook the eggs in salt water for 10 minutes, then let them sit in the water until they are cold. Store them in refrigerator.
Early the following day soak the Iguana in cold water. Skin it and wash it once more. Cut the Iguana into small pieces and cook it with 8 cups of water with salt, garlic, sliced onion, and black pepper. Grind it into a "Soft Mass" and mix it with the gravy.
Cook the corn in water until soft, then brown it (not too darkly) and grind to a lumpy mass. Take 4 cups of this corn, mix with the gravy and Iguana and cook, stirring constantly until it is well cooked.
In 2 1/2 cups of pork grease, fry 3 onions (chopped fine) until clear and light brown.
Set aside a few onions. With the rest, add the powdered pepper, Iguana mixture, more salt, sour oranges, and, if necessary, more pork grease. Do not let get too dry.
Form a large rounded shape in a serving dish and create an indentation in the center.

Sound a little gross, so........

Iguana

Which surely beats the hell out of this:

1 Iguana - female (how the hell do you figure that out? Do you have to catch it and inspect it?)
3 sour oranges (acid)
1 garlic bulb
4 lg. onions
1 tsp. black pepper (grain)
12 c. water
1 lb. dry corn (powdered)
1 tsp. REO PEPPER
3/4 bottle of pork grease
Salt to taste

The first day:
After the Iguana has been killed, open the stomach and below, take out the eggs and intestines. Clean the eggs very well with the sour oranges. Put the eggs in the arms with the Iguana in all its skin.

Later in the day cook the eggs in salt water for 10 minutes, then let them sit in the water until they are cold. Store them in refrigerator.

Hahahahah!

That's disgusting! And way too much work! How delicious can these things be? That's more work than Thanksgiving dinner!

Might try the drink though!

Moving away from the drinks topic. I did what all island people do and overpaid for a non superior product. The ONLY UV light on island was a 1800gall rated 16watt UV light. I won't have my 20 watt replacement bulb until mid Dec, its been about 4 weeks, I want to see my fish and I need some stress relief - the sister in law visit thing is ...... you know in laws ..... I need some fish time! So I over paid - not even going to say how much.

The guy said that the light would work in the pond, but might take longer, because my pond is 2200 gall (he might have lied, but I want to believe him, he saw the desperation in my eyes). The light is rated for a 700gall pump. I only had a spare 1000 gall pump, so I put a splitter on there with one going to the UV the other going straight back to the pond. I turned off my aerator, I figured, two new 'waterfalls' is enough.

Thoughts? Be gentle, I'm still recovering from the price - especially you DP!

The UV lamp is paired with a specified flow to allow for maximum exposure of the laden water with the UV rays. So, having reduced the flow to the lamp by diversion, you've achieved pretty much the same result.

Have you dosed with bacteria?

Another option might be to cut the bottom out of a large pail, stuff the pail with batting and then direct your "spitter" into the pail in order to trap some of the algae while allowing the "filtered" water to percolate back into the pond. Not sure how effective this might be, but it would be cheap.

Thanks for the moral support!

What do you mean dose with bacteria. To date (11 months) I have avoided adding anything to the pond.

There are many brands of "beneficial bacteria". Beneficial bacteria maintain a balance in the pond. The bacteria serve to break down harmful ammonia and nitrites that comes from fish waste (how big is an iguana landmine, I don't know) and from other decaying organic matter and converts them into nitrates, which the aquatic plants use up.

I do bacterial dosing once a month. There is a dosing recommendation (ie. so many ounces per so many 100's of gallons), follow the dosing recommendations. Don't remember it offhand, all my supplies have been put into heated storage for the winter season.

If you're going to buy beneficial bacteria, buy the largest container possible to keep your cost/oz. down. It keeps, just be sure to shake it like a martini before applying it to the pond.

You might also want to look into adding barley extract to the pond, this "stains" the water to a "weak tea" tinge, which cuts down the photosynthesis that the algae require. Barley is available in several forms (pellet, straw, liquid). For the pellet and actual straw, I recommend placing them into a nylon bag and then weighing the bag down with a stone. For ease of use, the liquid form is the best bet, in my opinion.

There's nothing wrong with "adding" stuff to the pond.
