OLD FASHIONED SOUTHERN BISCUIT RECEIPT
Cook Time: 10 minutes

Prep Time: 10

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons lard or shortening
1 cup sour milk
Preparation:

Mix dry ingredients together; cut in lard or shortening. Slowly blend in milk, just until dry ingredients are moistened. Roll out on floured cloth or surface to about 1/2-inch thick. (Do not roll too thin.) Cut with glass tumbler. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake at 350° 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Serve with butter and your choice of preserves, jam, jelly or syrup.

HOW TO RENDER LARD

Pork Back Fat (or leaf fat, if you are lucky enough to find it)

Remove any remaining meat from fat and grind in a meat grinder on coarsest setting. If you don’t have meat grinder you can chop the fat coarsely.

Transfer ground fat into a heavy bottomed stock pot and add enough water to barely cover the fat. Cook over low heat until water evaporates and fat begins to melt.

As fat melts, skim it off and into a mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth.

Keep fat skimmed off before crackling settle to the bottom seperate from fat skimmed off after cracklins settle. The first fat will be for pastry and have no porky taste, the subsequent skimmings will have a slightly piggy taste and is perfect for savory applications. I also saved the bottom of the pot rendered lard which I poured through a sieve to catch all the gunk. I will save this for cooking eggs with and have it labeled “porky” in the photo below. The lard will look yellow when warm, but as it cools it will become snow white.

Koi Guy, I have the black seed oil still in my fridge, from when I was sick in the hospital with streptococcal blood poisoning from a strange bug bite about five years ago. It is still in the fridge, but I think is is expired now and I should buy some fresh stuff and start taking it regular again.

While sick and in the hospital, my sister Bev brought me some from her store to take. If you take large doses it will give you a feeling of well being, a feeling of euphoria, and I believe that and the coconut oil, plus the water from the young coconut helped me made a good recovery fast. I was up walking around and feeling very good after taking that combination. I always drink the water from the young coconut, and that protected my my kidneys from any damage caused by the bad blood poisoning,

Streptococcal is a bacteria that also causes the flesh eating disease, although that never developed, I did get a very dangerous secondary infection, before they actually diagnosed me, while still in the ER, called Streptococcal Ammonia lung infection, and my left lung became hard as a rock and I could not breath out of that lung. I made a full recovery, and I believe it was due in part to the coconut oil, black seed oil, and the water from many fresh young coconuts.

The black seed oil does have a strange taste that is very hard to swallow.

many younger people then me have died of the Streptococcal blood poisoning....

Glad you made a full recovery from that nasty strep illness Colleen. There are so many good choices to make in this world in regards to staying healthy and getting our health back. We live in a lazy society now where quick and easy throw it at us foods in a box or a can seems to be the way lots of us choose to go. And it really will end up being the way we GO..........if we don't change our ways.......me included :biggrinangelA:

A dear friend if mine died when she was 35. Five years before that, she contracted streptococcus pneumonia, it was so bad that it attacked her heart muscles also, and weakened them. It took a long time to recover from the pneumonia, but she did. Unfortunately it left her heart very very weak, to the point she needed a transplant. Five yesrs after the pneumonia she was found in her house dead from Congestive Heart Failure. Im glad you found a way to beat it Colleen, God has truely blessed your life and your husbands. Your good people Colleen :)

I do feel very blessed to have survived and recovered so quickly, but I also eat very very well, and the doctor at the time could'nt believe I was up and walking around the next day, demanding to be let out! They kept me there for five days, other person I know that had blood poisoning was sick for over a month in the hospital and she is the same age as me! I really think if you eat lots of good food plus lots of saturated fats that you will be healthier!

Just finished work, and I was talking to one of the night crew guys, about the three women that also work at our store, that have had strokes in the past year. I know each of them and talk with them all the time, so today I found out that one of the night crew guys who is the same age as me (48) , we were in the same grade together in school, a small skinny guy, who also had a stroke a couple months ago!!! His name is Ryan, and guess what!!! He ate the margarine too!!!

OMG!!! now I am really MAD!! That is now 4 people that I know, who all ate margarine, who I work with at the Superstore, that employs about 350 people, that have had a stroke in the past year!! CALL THE FOOD POLICE QUICK!! They had better get that stinkin Margarine off the self quick!!!!

Beaver butt used as 'natural flavoring' in your food

Millions of people across the globe are eating "beaver butt" and don't even know that they're consuming such a substance.
It's called "castoreum," and it's emitted from the castor sacs within the animal's anus. For a beaver, this slimy brown substance is used to mark its territory, but for us humans, it's used as an additive that is often labeled as "natural flavoring" in the foods we eat - vanilla, strawberry and raspberry probably being the most common.
Why is castoreum used? The most notable characteristic (after being processed) has to be the smell of castoreum. Instead of smelling horrible, like most people would expect from an anally produced secretion, it has a pleasant scent, which supposedly makes it a perfect candidate for food flavoring and other products.
The question that many people put forth would have to be "who in their right mind actually made this odd discovery?"
Another industry that utilizes castoreum is the fragrance world. For decades, perfume manufactures have been using it to make various types of fragrances. These anal secretions are said to contain around 24 different molecules, many of which act as natural pheromones. From perfumes to air fresheners, castor sacs are quite versatile within the fragrance industry.

Is it natural?
Sure it's natural, but does "being natural" make it right to use or consume?
Many disgusting substances are considered "natural," yet eating them may not be the best idea.
The act of labeling something so vulgar and disgusting as "natural flavoring," should be illegal in many people's eyes, but the FDA views it all in a different light.
Having the anal secretions from a beaver take the place of a strawberry in something like strawberry ice cream hardly seems like an efficient process. Why go through the process of harvesting "anal secretions" when a strawberry is much easier to pick?
It hardly seems like a better option...
The food industry is a tricky business to figure out, and it will continue to boggle the minds of many on issues exactly like this. Much like with other additives that have raised concern over the years (aspartame, high fructose corn syrup and food colorings), castoreum is proving to be just as questionable.
It's the deceptive labeling that seems to be the root of the problem. Instead of stating what castoreum truly is, the FDA has allowed it to be labeled as something that sounds pleasant and healthy.
As with many questionable additives in today's food market, the power lies within the people. Read your labels thoroughly if you wish to subtract these types of ingredients from your diet.
In all honesty, castoreum is probably safe to consume, being that is derived from an animal, but who really wants to eat a beaver's anus?

Good grief koiguy that is disgusting and you made me go run and look that up too just to make sure it was really true. I checked on snopes and not that I believe everything they say but on this I can't see why they would be wrong.

These are the dried perineal glands of the beaver. They contain castoreum — a food additive usually listed as 'natural flavoring' in the ingredient list. Castoreum is the exudate from the castor sacs of the mature North American Beaver, it is a yellowish secretion in combination with the beaver's urine, used during scent marking of territory. Yes, while it does sound disgusting, it is still probably better than a "chemical replacement"!
The Chinese eat every part of the animal I have heard, the British and many others eat "Head Cheese!"! (Now that is gross)
Still there are people I have read that drink the blood from animals too, but the most gross is problally the groups of people that eat HIGH Meat!!

High Meat is meat that has been aged, VerY WELL, till it is RoTTen Stinkin MEAT!! In the high Arctic in Russia, they eat High Wallrus meat, and they hold their nose before they eat this reportly very healthy meat.

Many civilizations throughout history have eaten rotten stinkin meat. The Japanese eat very old rotten duck eggs, and in the old Robin Hood movies, you would see ducks and geese hung by their necks in an "open food market". The ducks and other fowl are hung by their necks till they rot, and the fowl fall to the ground.... then it is time to eat them!!! This is very very true!!!

We even eat meat that is sort of aged.... in specialty butcher shops, you can find beef that is the highest quality, it is rated "AAAA"!
Double AA... aged two weeks...
Triple AAA ... aged three weeks...
Four AAAA... aged four weeks... the longer you age the beef the better it tastes and is more tender.

HIGH Meat is meat aged six months at least.... "bugs" have come and gone by then, and then the meat is safe to eat!!!

I read a book on High Meat once....:)

NO thank you very much Colleen! I do have my limits on eating things that are good for me. I am not eating anything I have to hold my nose for. Now tell me do you or have you ever or do you plan on eating high meat? I think they are feeling like they are high from that meat cuz they are on there way to Heaven real quick like :biggrin:
