Zman, I never seem to spot any leopard frogs until later in the summer, usually August. And, some of the little frogs hop around on the sidewalks and walkways, and never seem to go into the ponds at all, but I suspect they use the water for egg laying and hatching, although I've yet to spot any tiny tadpoles, except for a couple of years ago when the toads loaded up the goldfish pond lilies with eggs, then hundreds of tiny black taddies on the bottom. Never did see even one baby toad taddy grow up, though. I wonder if a snake got my fantails, another possibility, although I have not seen a large snake near the ponds. Not sure if the little snapper is still in my ponds or not. He could easily be in either of the bogs, or in any of the lily pots, and I would never find it. I have a mask and snorkel and could go looking, but I figure if it's there, it will hopefully leave before fall. Pretty sure it was a snapper trying to burrow into the koi pond bog and sliced the liner at the bottom 2 years ago. So, snappers are NOT welcome at all. Have lost no other fish that I'm aware of, and there are 2 more medium sized fantails, or just a little larger than the tiny ones anyhow, and they are both present and accounted for.
Pretty frogs, everyone, and sure am glad you have some frogs now, Mr Pond!!! Congrats.

I did some more reading on that. In California, the subspecies is considered endangered and protected by law. I can understand that since I'd assume it needs a lot of wet and cool. It really is one of the things I love about WA state is that we have a lot of trees and wet and cool temps. If I could, I'd build a small lazy river all around our property.

I have begun calling this bullfrog "Big Joe". He tends to sit on the landscape stones just off my deck, between where I stand to feed the fish and the pond. If I go slow, he will stay there while I feed.

Last night I picked off about 10 hornworms from my tomato plants before I sprayed the plants, and man did I have a fun time feeding them to the frogs! They all figured out the treats were coming immediately! This is pretty much the first time I've tossed something to them this year. This guy still had a piece of the tomato leaf in his mouth, since I tossed the worms in on the leaf. Guess he didn't want to let the worm go! And, this frog ate two worms, which were the size of my thumb! Piggy, huh?!

Last year at this time I already had my first frog in the old 400g pond. This year... still nothing. I'm hopeful one will wander in soon but I hate waiting.

On the bright side, the tadpole I put in my bog is still alive and has gotten big fast! Its either a Green Frog or Leopard Frog. I hope it sticks around after it changes, which may be in a couple weeks.

Was out working in the pond and after I was done noticed this guy just sitting there not bothered one bit by all the action. He even stood still for a photo shot.

ahh my frog always jump in the first sign on me even though i was 20+ feet away. Dont know how i will get the picture of her.

The one in my nature pond now is not the one I found earlier. I think the one I have now is older, judging from the darker color and a bit larger than the girl I saw.

I wish I could feed her :)

Sounds like a bullfrog, they don't let you near, usually. The green frog and the pickerel frog freeze and you can walk right up on them

Really? I didnt know about that. Last year my green frog was like this too though.
I swear I saw the ridge run through the back of this gal body, but I'll have to get a closer look to be sure.

I walk up to mine all of the time, they just sit there. We had a bull frog for a brief time, it never ever let me get close to it!

And all I have are bullfrogs. There are some that jump right away, but once they figure out that I may mean food, they will stay put. I have some in each of my ponds that never jump, I can be grooming lilies from the side of the pond, and be within 2' of them, and they say put. Sometimes I wonder if they are the same frog from year to year, but who knows. I wondered the same thing about the painted turtle that comes for a month every year, then is gone. I think they just figure out free food is just that ... free food. :) I will admit that I take most of my frog pics by zooming in on them, though. Also, certain times of the day they are more likely to stay put, too, like later in the afternoon when it's very warm. These cooler days/nights we are having this week, maybe only 1-2 frogs per pond in the morning, but more like 5-6 in the evening after warmer sunny day.
If you want to try feeding them, toss in something that they would like, that will float, and try to put it on top of lily pads. Even if the frog jumps, he's likely to come right back up, maybe on the other side of the pond. But, if there is a caterpillar crawling on the lily pads, he will spot it. Then the fun begins!
