The overwinter tads survived the winter, in shallow tiny ponds, I was surprised.

The toads laid eggs a month plus ago, they have already grown legs and hopped away, the tree frogs laid at the same time, they are now hopping away. The green frogs are just now dumping eggs. They share the pond nicely, each one picking a different time of year to drop eggs.

My HOA is after me to tear down my backyard water garden. I'm going to submit some plans to reduce its size but if it doesn't come thru approved, my main concern is saving all the poor little tree frog tadpoles. For that I'll have to probably net them and put them into a concrete mixing tub with an escape ramp so they don't die. I'm thinking what to feed them, maybe cooked oatmeal? Also maybe put the tub in half sun so it gets algea growing. I love the sounds of the tree frogs but without a lot of moving water I'm afraid they might disappear? This really sucks and if the plans are not approved we're moving away from the HOA crap we have to put up with with our finicky neighbors who reported me.

Unfortunately I have some sad news...

After a great start I went out to my pond this week and found mysteriously one of my frogs had passed away. No specific reasons I can account for.

Now, the tadpoles which were growing well, 20-30 where some had little legs, all seem to have disappeared.

The sad realisation of pond life

I'm lucky... I still have at least two frogs. They hide in one of the bushy plants..

Think I have 4 newts, wondering if it's them taking a snack on the tadpoles

@SE18 That's terrible news. Next time we move we are not living in a place w/ rules either. We have them here for our 5 houses but nobody bothers w/ them and we never formed any association so it worked out ok but still I would never do it again.

TgM, well I be! I live actually south of Altamont, so Heartville is pretty much straight East of me, and some north. If you ever are in need of any plants (bog plants or lilies), please PM me. I'm going to be dividing my lilies this weekend, and sending a bunch out to other ponders, and also have a bunch of bog plants. You'd be welcome to come and bring your family and view what I have created.
SE18, no way could I live in an area where someone else tells me if I can have my animals or ponds or whatever. If I lived in town, I know there are rules, but in your own yard, they can govern what you can and cannot put there? Maybe you just need a fence to keep your nosey neighbors noses out of it! ;-)

Thanks for the invite, Might take you up on that sometime CE. Part of the reason I joined this forum is that I caught Sheetmetalmans pond build. Read it from end to end, saw you and he were from this area and thought i might learn something. Good on lilies, got 14 or so from addy and they are doing wonderful. Like to see a bog sometime tho, thought about trying to put one in sometime in the future. North or south of Sutters? I travel that area a lot, or most of SE IL, lived 5-6 years just east of mason S of M E Rd.

I feel for you SE18, bad neighbors make life miserable. That's part of the reason we're where we are now.

Next road S of Sutters, then W 2 miles, then S 1/2 mile. Big white and maroon barns. I'll pm you my phone number. You're welcome to come any evening or weekend that I'm home. I LOVE my bog, and going to expand bog in koi pond. Yes, been to Sheetmetalman's pond, too, and it's gorgeous! Everyone has their own personal touch, and that's what I love about ponding. No set way to be "right".
Bullfrog was croaking to me as usual last night, just every 10 minutes or so, but I sure love to hear him. Soon hoping there is competition for him, and more croaking going on.

Metamorphosis is well under way and I've plenty of little frogs developing at the minute. I watched one little frog climb out of the pond earlier this evening. Here are a couple of photos taken yesterday afternoon:

I love watching them change, we have tons of toads morphing and hopping away, so tiny!
Neat pictures
