My supplier of food is no longer carrying the brand I have used for past 3 years...is there a topic on here about what people are feeding and where they get it from? Saw the ad for koifoodshack and didn't know if that was a good source or not...

Thanks,
Olee

The main thing I have read, mainly koi breeders, is stay away from food that is high in corn content. They say the fish do not really digest the corn, just poop it out.

Corn is bad? Do they even make an off-the-shelf food that doesn't contain corn in some form? The Summer food I have lists ground corn as the second ingredient. My Winter food lists corn flour as the second. Not sure if there's a difference, but I do know they list ingredients in the order of overall content. Anyone found a commonly-sold (available at the chain stores) food that is fairly cheap and doesn't have corn or wood-pulp as a major ingredient?

Both the Spring (Tetra) and Summer (Wardleys) of mine have either corn or corn flour as the 2nd ingredient. Have goldfish only and not spending an arm and a leg on high priced foods. I'll give them some watermelon and other treats now and then too along w/ the bugs and worms they get on their own. Not feeding them everyday either, just maybe 3 days per week and while gone away nothing.

j.w - I feed mine exactly the same thing... Wardley's in the Summer, and the Tetra Spring mix in the Fall/Spring. They seem to like it, but of course if I can reduce the waste, that'd be great. I picked up a 20oz bag of this Pond Care brand from PetCo for $15... pretty expensive, but I didn't see any corn listed (and it looks like it has a lot of great stuff in it). I'm going to mix that with the Wardley's. If nothing else, the fish should enjoy the variety.

I do feed mine every day, but now that the plants are growing in and there's a lot for the fish to nibble on, I limit the amount of food they get.

Shdwdrgn let us know how they like the new pricey stuff. Might be a good way to get them some good stuff mixed in w/ the other.

mine have been getting corn based food, had some stuff I was using up. The main thing mentioned was a reduction in poop and more digestible without as much corn. I have some non corn food I won, going to try it this summer. They have been getting treat winter spring food right now, just every three days or so.

Holy moly that stuff is expensive! I'll not be buying it! Tell your fish to enjoy it while they can cuz after it's gone it's back to middle class food!
