I have never added fertilizer or tabs two of my lillies and always get decent amounts of blooms. I do have three others that have never done anything though, they might be a dfferent type of lilly too because their leaves are small about 2" in diameter and a maroon color. So why would some do really well and the others just blah? Same nutrients in the pond. The only difference is that the two that get big are in the deepest end of the pond and the other three are in about 24" of water.

I would think the primary issue is that if your filter system is working TOO well, then the plants are not getting any "food" and that's why they need special tabs etc.
Not a bad problem to have really. No blooms = mega clean water!

My filter system is not working that well. Funny how my pond last year was crystal clear although I was fighting string algae. This year the pond was upgraded from a 550 gal pump/fountain, inside a small box with sponge filter and bio balls with a 9 watt uv light...to a savio skimmer, 18 watt uv light, 2500 gal pressurized filter and waterfall. The water is cloudy and green.

I wonder if it is from not having rocks on the bottom of the pond as I did last year. They may have helped keep down all the debris instead of having the fish sweeping it up as the swim around the pond.

Oh, and my husband spoke with a man is friends with a guy that has a koi farm in columbia. My hubby told him that we have a couple ponds too. The guy asked how big and when he heard he started laughing and said those aren't ponds, their not even mud holes. LOL His ponds are as big as my house.

(not wanting to steer away from the original topic of this thread but) i dont think it is from stirred up debris unless you have tiny pond with big fish, any debris stirred up by fish is usually small and localised not enough to cloud up a 1400 gall pond !, i think you may just have to wait a while for your new filter to kick in and start working properly, and as for the man from columbia, i think he is a bit arrogant, shouldnt laugh at anybodys pond! we are all in the same hobby from 1 extent to the other, and back on topic, i think the theory could be correct regarding not enough nutrients in the water for the flowers on the lilly, as my irises only flowered for a really short period of time and the bullrushes are growing really slowly, maybe my filter is working too well !

agree mogsie, patience is the key with a new pond. I have had to feed my plants, low bio load, which with the fry is getting larger.
