I go by water temps.

Below 50 degree water temps = No Food
50-70 degree consistent water temps = Cold water food
70+ degree consistent water temps = Warm water food

consistent being the key word here. And the warmer the water gets the more frequently I feed. Up to 3 times a day in the heat of the summer. Maybe once every other day in the spring and fall.

I have only ever bought koi food but would be interested in making my own :) I have my own garlic patch so I could feed garlic rather easily.

Strange correlation that my pond can be 65 degrees when it is 35 outside or 80 outside. I'm actually surprised that a "knowledgeable" poster would base their feeding on the outside temperature.
I dont deselplower I go off water temperature but as the winter progesses then I start to use the two. As I already said there is a direct correlation between the cooling effect of winter to our resovours especially the one only half a mile up the road which is open to the winter weather and supplies our area.
Meaning you you will get water from your taps colder than the pond hence the trickle method of filling the pond also remember ours is above ground and not bellow .
However if you had read some of my other treads you'll find that we heat the filter housing causing the pond water to warm upunder the polycarbonate quadruple sheeting which doesnt allow heat to escape from the pond so in the past at the start of our outdoor koi keepingif when we were not heating the heating the filter housing the pond would have dropped to 10c and we would stop feeding our koi.

MUCKY, why dont you just pay a kid to do it? or cant you set up an aquarium at work for them? come on, your boss would probably work with you on it! maybe they can set up a fish day care for their employees.....
Now finally somebody here is coming up with some good ideas,,,, except for the paying the kid idea. I sure as heck ain't lazy, but I am cheap.

My air temp has gone down to 36 at night to now 51 at night, from high 50's during the day to climbing back up to high 70's during the day. The pond has gone from 70 down to 56 in a week, now climbing back up to 62, most likely higher with the warmer days coming again.
I feed until it goes down and stays down (pond temp) This time of year everything bounces up and down.
