the way you backwash a bog is to use the POND PUMP (assuming a large enough one here) to push water DOWN through the bog stone and the debris are forced to the lower depths (breaking loose any planar debris on the bottom of the pea gravel layer) and then into a centipede structure (this can be any plumbing such as your manifold that ends in another unit called a snorkel, which is where you'd then put a SECONDARY pump to pump out the dirty water). The manifold should pitch toward the centipede, which WILL be the lowest point of your bog. Depending on force from the pond pump, it should take 2-3 backflushes/aux pump pumpouts before you get clean water.Great work, in the near future I hope to start a project although smaller than yours, over 2700 gallons. One question, how are you going to make the water inlet from the pond to the bog diffuser? Although it may not have any importance when having the milk boxes, because you have a pool of water that will press up regardless of where the water enters. I've also been thinking about backwashing, they say it takes a lot of water power pressing up. It could be an option to leave a tube inserted at different depths of gravel, for example three tubes with their plug (hidden with stones) so we could plug in the hose and it would not take as much water force as only to do it from above.
I think it's feasible, GB; I've tried using a hose from the house (and that was the problem, to which your post is relevant) and DID clear some out but it did seem like a lot of work for little gain. This method was from a pond professional and I actually talked to him (AFTER the fact, unfortunately) via phone and the idea is you NEED the force from the pond pump (again, it has to be substantial; nothing rated for less than 2k gph is going to do much, imo) AND the bog sides should be shaped into a V so all debris carried down goes to the lowest point.Back flushing a bog is primarily futile . While it will get what accumulates across the snorkel to a degree and as the water may drop and some sediments will fall out of the stone. ANYONEwho has ever tried to wash their gravel before they put it into the bog will tell you the amount of water needed while a lot is not the problem . The problem is exactly why the bog works so well it can hold and trap huge amounts of sediment and throwing all the water you want at it the majority will never wash up of a thick mass of stones. Now it you make the thickness only 2 inches the water can effectively flush out these sediments. Make it a foot thick and it becomes impossibly
It's already made! 3" PVC goes to the very bottom and goes into the 12" centipede unit. That's pretty much it!how are you going to make the water inlet from the pond to the bog diffuser?
That's a pretty big line feeding a bog . I imagine your throwing a ball valve to limit the amount of water your going to push through it . What are you leaning toward as a gph
