Fired up the ol' bleep bloop machine. Alternate pond volume calculation acquired. Can you guess how many gallons the whole system is? Answer @ end of video:

It's pretty hard to accurately estimate volume on a free-form pond with multiple shelves and filled with boulders. If you think you have an x,000 gallon pond but haven't actually measured it, I bet you're off by at least 15%

I kinda thought you might have a lot less in the actual pond, as I compared yours to my pond size. When just a hole, yours looked like a small lake but you're right; fill it with rocks, etc and watch the volume go down quickly!

Btw, you really think you'll get a full 1000 gallons in the bog? I'm a bit doubtful about that number too, so will be interesting to find out actual results. What is the layering design you're going with? I know you're using centipede and snorkel, but how much/size of the stone above? And bog dimensions?

You ARE going to meter the bog separately, right? When I state my pond volume, I'm just usually talking about the pond proper, not the bogv1, bogv2, small stream, and barrels for the bog prefilter, despite they all hold water. Will be more important if I ever need to dose, but I tend to just apply any pond size gallonage to what I'd see if sitting next to it!

In one of the videos you talked about placing fabric over the milk crates off to the side , i hope you have enough liner to cover over the top of the cistern as well in the areas other then where it is to drop in. I would strongly recommend the azek sheet and or something to protect if not close those sides up just fabric alone will allow for sediment to drip in

Been ignoring the negative edge/cistern for a bit while I finish up other stuff. Will be getting back to it soon, I'm sure. Top of cistern will definitely be protected from sediment infiltration.

it's tricky and probably why there's not lot of videos on it

@combatwombat - we did have to medicate once for a massive die off that we attributed to a parasite, but the Prazipro dosage amounts were relatively forgiving. An educaated guess-timate worked fine. If I were dosing a small closed system (like an aquarium) I'd be a lot more careful about water volume.

Bottom filter is in. This will be an upflow/pressure filter, not a suction filter like many others do. Several reasons for that.

1. Bottom will be sand, which is incompatible with a suction filter.
2. Easier to plumb w/ submersible pump.
3. I get more waterfall w/ an upflow filter!

Started it two weeks ago but was delayed by cold, rain, minor surgery and a house full of sick people. Trunk is 2" PVC. Legs are 1.5" and used single tees instead of doubles because... that's what I could find in the quantity I needed.

Drilled three 5/16" holes every 6" down the trunk and legs and one hole in each end cap. Total holes add up to about 10x the area of the 2" trunk so if I ever do want to reverse it to a suction filter, I can do so w/o having issues w/ the pump.

Couldn't find a 2" cap (supply chain, amiright?) so I stuck a clean out on the end instead. Will probably never have a use for it, but doesn't hurt!

Pipes will push water through 6" of sand. Don't know the exact SSA, but I bet there's more in 6" of sand than 2' of gravel. Between this and the bog, will have about 35% of pond surface area doing upflow filtration.

Rain or not you have been busy. Are you aware not all sand is created equal ? Some sand will never settle when stored up while other sand compacts so dense. I believe your looking for course sand. But I am not positive

I also question how much head pressure this is going to add.

So instead of return jets you went with a upflow at the bottom of the pond?

Where is the upflow water coming from ? Is it being filtered before its pumped to the sand ?

Long time coming looking forward to see a fish in the pond. But I'm betting it will be Cw in the pond first.
