That is like running a 300 watt bulb 24 /7 and not sure I would want to use that much energy since I did all the things I could to lower my energy bills .I guess it would depend on your electric rates and what you are willing to spend .That would be up to you .I would try looking for a pump that uses less energy myself .Right now my 1 uses 155 watts and the other one I have uses 100 watts .I want to make it less than that though because electric rates are not going down .The 100 watt one I only use in the summer it is a little to much power for the filters come winter since it pumps more water I will be shutting off the 155 watt in December and only using the one extra smaller pump I have that uses 45 watts for the winter and is 950 gph also a harbor freight one ..

Try the sequence pumps they tend to be low electric use. I have two (not using right now) but when I did, did not even notice an electrical increase.

Thanks, Sissy! Ashamed to say that I really don't keep up with energy usage on a per-appliance level, to the extent that I look at the wattage. So really don't have a clue what to use as a baseline.... Is there a consumer-friendly web site that lists this kind of information? That way when we look at a pump, we'll be more AWARE.

PS -- I just looked my pump up on the HOME DEPOT site, and it doesn't say anything about energy usage. :(

Your electric company online can give you all the info .Also you will need to have a budget on how much you want to spend on the pump ,Submerged or out of pond or combo of that

Ohm's law formula for power that is rated in Watts is WATTS=I X E I is current rated in Amperes. E is Volts Watts can be calculated by multiplying Amperes times Voltage. I hope this will help.

Is it really THAT easy? And these are things that should be noted on the pump somewhere I'm guessing. Gonna go pull mine and look at the label.

PS -- no need to pull the pump, just looked up the specs. So according to that formula, my current, 3600 gph pump is rated at 195.5 watts...

Is that good? I have no idea...
NO.. 350 WATTS IS MORE THAN TWICE THE POWER USED BY A LAGUNA...IT'S ONLY 170 WATTS FOR A LAGUNA 4200GPH PUMP.
YOU COULD RUN 2 4200GPH PUMPS WITH LESS POWER, EQUALLING 8400GPH.

OK. Changing gears.

Now that I've gotten my pump out of the water and examined it -- DUH!! The output end accepts standard threaded PVC fittings. Guess I never noticed that as Hubby assembled everything, and at the time we set the pump and pond up, I just assumed that "it" [everything POND] had to be complicated. And it's taken me THIS long to realize otherwise....

So, after researching pumps and comparing wattage, I've decided to stick with my current pump -- until it wears out [and meanwhile, I can continue "shopping"]. My biggest problem with it was that I THOUGHT I wouldn't be able to hook it up to flex PVC, but now I know that isn't an issue. It's rated at 3600gph. I've never tested it, but know it moves a lot of water, with good head pressure -- so I feel comfortable that it will run my [future] bog and "turtle" bog without problems. And if the calculations were correct, the wattage is better than most comparable newer ones that I would be replacing it with.

Anyway, thanks guys for the help, and for giving me a chance to bounce ideas!

I have been doing that also with pumps since I bought the Harbor freight 1 back in 2010 and worried it may die on me one day .I got a laguna 1 but had problems with it and told them they sent a new 1 and it did not work either and I gave up on them .I bought a fishmate 1 and it was not working right either .It kept going up and down with pumping the water .I would just love to get 1 more energy efficient .I think I am destined to get all the lemons .That's why I wonder if it is because of energy efficient factor .

I think sometimes that you tend to get more crap online than if you shop at a bricks-and-mortar store. If you had come to our garden center for that Laguna, I would have taken it out of the box, set it up for you, and placed it in water to show you exactly how much water it pumps! Sorry your experience with Laguna wasn't good, but I STILL think they're great pumps. :bye2:

i agree wholeheartedly... they're an excellant pump. as are fishmate pumps. excellant head ratings, and excellant power consumption. come one really, you cant debate that 170 watts for 4200gph isn't far far better than 350 watts for 4000gph. my laguna has a 4 year warranty too. my fishmate is 10years old atleast and still runs great!
