I have had a couple of near misses that kept me awake at night and then I got a little Giant shut off switch. It costs about $30 and cuts off the pumps when the water falls below the level of where you put it in the water. I put mine just below the level where the water would be after backwash so it doesn't turn off the pump. I have had it for nearly ten years and wouldn't have a pond without one.
