Pump and filters need to run 24/7. Turning them off for several days could be starting over. I doubt that the filter on your fountian is adequate for your fish load. Is it just foam media?

Since a bog isn't an option, I would consider a good pressure canister filter. Its a sealed system, easy to clean, just backflush occasionally.
