Your general rule of thumb is thus: if you see it growing locally in nature, no special care is needed for over-wintering. If purchased from a nursery, check the hardiness zone information at time of purchase.
Most of the marginal plants sold in northern climes are hardy, with the exception of ornamentals which are clearly marked as such (ie. papyrus). Most marginal plants are planted in containers, so check the root growth of marginal plants once a year, as the roots can escape the container and spread within the pond. In northernm climes, pitch the water hyacinth and the water lettuce.
Some pond plants are quite aggressive, such as sweet flag and bulrush, sending out offgrowth that can quickly overcome a pond. Simply cut the trailing root back. Watch the liner, always cut "up".
