Pond Description:
Approx. gallons/liter: 6000g

General Notes: 4 aeration holes, , 2 frozen over. Ice 3" thick, lots of animal footprints. Surface heater gets plugged in after a few weeks of all 4 aeration holes frozen over. Fish population 3 - 8" koi, 4 - 6" shubunkins.
Interesting to note that since the aeration holes have frozen over, the bottom temperature has risen by 2 degrees F. When all 4 holes were open, temp was 53.5F.

Surface pond temp: 32.1F (a few inches below the ice)

Is that bottom temp accurate and correct? That sounds very high for surface temps to be that low with any water movement at all. I even went back and look at others and they seem more on tract with there area/air temp. With a bottom temp of 55 I can't even figure out how the surface freezes.

This is the second location that I've tried a bottom temp reading, both with similar results.
I'll have to pick up a second probe so I can get confirmation. The high temp reading does seem strange.

I bought a second thermometer this fall to measure temps near the surface (already have one for bottom temps), however the probe gave me a false high temperature reading, so I returned the thermometer and bought a different one that seems to be working properly. The probe on the first one was reading 140 C 6" under the ice, I was pretty sure that was not the correct temp. ;)

Have you tried just putting the underwater probe beside the main temp probe to compare readings?

I'll have to wait to try that. The whole pond is frozen over again, so the wires are not moveable.
Today the bottom reading is 59F, I'm thinking I might have a probe that is slowly going bad or shorting out or whatever they do. I think the probes measure temperature based on electrical resistance within the probe itself.

Looking at my Weather underground banner, it's reading NA Fahrenheit and 999 Celsius...lol.
