well im down to about 30...I keep losing them either cause theyre not eating or they are deformed in some way

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that! That's to be expected through just natural selection. Remember, you have a 375 gallon pond---you didn't think you'd have 100 full size koi in that did you?! LOL!

If you end up with 3-4 good specimens from that lot you are good to go! It's just the law of natural selection happening!
