KHV is very real, once she reaches the states in early April she will go to the Buyers holding facility for about 4-6 weeks, during that time she will be given a KHV test, and will also go through a series of scrapes and scopes. Then she will come here and go into QT for another 3-6 weeks as well. After a long debate, many votes from three sites, and a talk to the buyers we felt that #2 had the best future for the overall look I was looking for. I really thought #3 would have been the best, Most of the more serious Koi Critiques' thought #1 was the best fish. So here is Mom and baby to give some comparison.

I like both the coloring and form of #2. I suspect that the "fatter" bodies of the other two are considered more desirable.
The other two were kept in a heated greenhouse and were being fed through the winter, #2 was in a unheated green house for the last two months and has not been being fed. So it does appear skinny and under weight, I've been assured by the time I get her she will have plumped up considerably. My biggest concern with #2 is it appears to be male from the pictures, the breeder says female. Either way I'll be happy but I was really shooting to get a nice quality female.
#3 was picked by most of the more advance Koi keepers on the Koi sites. #2 was picked more by the ladies, and those that look at the fish as it appears and not so much for what it could turn out to be when finished.

Still going to be another month to a month and a half. It is in the states now but still in quarantine. Once it passes all it's health checks then I should get a notice of when to set a schedule for it to arrive. And yes I'll be taking plenty of pics.

KHV is a very real threat to koi that is indeed true unfortunately its already got a foothold in the US and many other countries around the world so sadly its a problem that wont go away anytime soon .
If you goldfish keepers are breathing a sigh of releif that it cant infect your goldfish sorry folks there is also a virus GHV or goldfish Herpes Virus again it has a foothold in many countries including the US though not as lethal as KHV it can still claim goldfish coming down with it.
I'd like to know which came first and did one mutate into the other ?
Also if it was intensive farming methods that brought this all about ?

How old are they? tosa? I vote 3. If you look close you can see the sumi(black) is still coming up. When it comes to utsuris you don't want the "finished" look on a young fish you want to see the sumi developing under waiting to come up. If it has the finished look too early it could fail on you(loose the deep richness of the balck) as it gets older and bigger. You could even go for #1 but I think the body conformation on #3 looks better to my eye. The only think that I would knock #3 for is the solid black tail tube I would rather it look more like #1's. I would rate them best to worst 3, 1, 2.

I am no expert and still learning myself. The fish will be yours so choose what looks best to your eye but I would stay away from #2
Good luck

WOW I just saw this is a year old post. What one did you pick any update pictures?

LOL, I can tell some of you are new or haven't followed my other posts in some time. I picked the darker one, She was the last fish I lost in the big accident this last spring. She was really growing well and had reached 20" when she passed. All her color held well through the summer and I do miss her. I bought another Shiro last fall that has been with the breeder since I purchased her. I will be finally taking possession of her in about a month at the Dallas Koi show. I also have another Shiro that I rescued this summer that is from Omosako bloodline and is close to 30". I only have a few pictures of her but she is really growing on me.

OH gosh...I am so sorry, I am new and I feel just awful for you...I've lost two fish (both very small, but still) and I was devastated. Sorry to dredge up a painful subject.

I like #1 the best, it made me smile. It reminds me of a dairy cow, I love dairy!!! So that tells you everything you need to know about my fish knowledge!!! #2 is my second fav, looks like his barbs are different colors.
