You are more likely to puncture a liner with a drinking straw than with a bullhead whisker. Your indoor pond is big enough for your 3 comets -- nothing more. Catfish/bullheads should never be put with goldies. Stick with the bullheads. Rehome the goldfish.

while fishing i've been stuck by a bullhead, they can pretty easily draw blood! i would have to say their barbels considerably harder and sharper than a drinking straw. dont know how much of a risk to a liner they'd be tho.

I havent decided who gets the pond yet, but i got some news tonight that the pond will have to go outside. I plan to water proof the wood with thompsons water sealer stuff then hit it with a coat of exterior paint. Will this be enough. Could I skip the paint or thompsons sealer or do I need both.

I would protect the wood the best i could...Weather and time is tough on it
Just dont let any of the treated wood run off , seep back into the water

You have to check with someone familiar with your climate. With termites and summer rains, that wouldn't last a summer where I live. Even in the far north, wood in contact with moist ground is only good for a few years.

Concrete works -- above and below grade. Far easier is to get a 300 gallon stock tank, It's designed for outdoors, fish-safe, and is already made.

Clemsonguy- We have 2 ponds made from 2x12s. Both are partially below ground. The oldest one is 12+ years old and showing no sign of rot. It is pressure treated but no additional treatment was used.

We did get our wood from Lowes. Had good luck with the ones in our area. Home Depot usually has the same prices so check them out. Here they have poor quality wood. I don't know how you are planning on building your pond but let me warn you, we spent more on carriage bolts than on the wood!

All the wood I could find was warped so I settled on supporting the plastic shell with cinderblocks.

That works!

So far it does. I filled the bottom portion and the sides bulged out a little but not much. Ill fill the top portion tomorrow. I hope the two tons of water does't clapse or deform the shell too much. Which would be better for the fish, to leave them in a 10 gallon over the winter or move them into the cold water. It never freezes but probably hits 40. They are three 5 inch comet goldfish.

Ok, the tank had a whisper 2-5 sponge filter and I do water changes fairly often ill take some readings when I get the pond cycled to see. Ill add them if the temeratures over 60 if not, ill wait. Thanks, whats the best was to cycle a pond and any ideas for plants that dont need much light and can live through the winter.
