I'm trying to determine what type of hose I should use for my new bog filter. My previous filter was a submersible one, with just a 2' piece of 1" black hose.

But, this time I'm going to need more hose and was going to use 1-1/2" diameter. It's going to go up from the pump, then along the outside of the pond and into the bog filter. I will use some rocks to hide it, but some of it will be exposed to the sun.

You are going to want to use PVC for inside your bog for the plumbing. I have ran PVC for all of my tubing. I have discovered that you can bend pvc the same way as the flexible hose without having to use fittings a bunch. I have 1 1/2" pvc for all of my tubing.

Are you talking about flexiable PVC piping? Rigid PVC won't work for what I'm thinking of doing. I'm going to need to be able to pull the pump in & out of the pond, so it needs to be pretty flexible. Is flexible PVC really flexible? I was thinking something like pool hose, but something a little less brittle.

Black sump pump hose. You can put a connector between your permanent, rigid hose and use the flexible sump pump hose from your pump to the connector.

It's pretty cheap, I think something like $10 for 25 feet.

I used the hard black pvc from the pond to inside the bog. Had to use elbows to get it where I wanted it to go. Attached the soft black hose to that under the water to the pump.

I use it between my permanent, rigid hoses and the pumps. It's flexible.

No, it's not smooth on the inside, but who cares? It's only 3-4 feet.

I actually don't think they sell they black pvc here in Jersey. If they do I haven't seen it. He was referring to bending hard pvc pipe. I would probably search youtube if you are interested in bending it. I use the grey electrical pvc in my pond but if it sprung a leak its all within the pond. Its cheaper than the one meant for plumbing but doesn't have the pressure ratings of the white PVC. I have my pump where I can reach it and use a rubber boot to unscrew and pull the pump.

I would use the flexible hose posted inside the pond but you really need to switch to hard pipe for any run outside the pond because those flexible hoses spring leaks very easily.

I now have a combo of the corrugated hose [1 1/2"] and some rigid PVC. Going to switch to all FLEX PVC, soon, though. Someone on here uses sump hose, which is flexible.

black pipe is abs pipe .The more elbows and fitting you use the more you restrict the flow of water and the more chance you have with clogs in it .I use sump pump and have stepped on it in the rebuild and have not harmed it or kinked it but not sure how it would be in a bog .

I use 1.25" black corrugated stuff to go from my pump to my bog (ordered from http://pondliner.com/c-367-spiral-tubing.aspx -- no affiliation, just a happy customer!). For the part that is underground, I fished it through some 2" white PVC so I can pull it out without having to take apart the rock wall over it. Once it gets to my bog, it transitions to 1.5" rigid white PVC (the kind from Home Depot) which has been drilled with holes. This year, I also added a check valve to keep the backflow at bay when the pump gets turned off.

Over the winter, I thought I could get away with not pulling it out (what can I say, i'm lazy and didn't want to muck around in the dirt in November) but when I fired everything up last week, I found that the black pipe had busted over our horrible, horrible winter. It was easy to replace (a $30 mistake I won't make again). Next year, that sucker is getting pulled, which makes me thankful for the 2" pvc housing.
