That should still work but you will need a clamp also. Barb connectors work better with clamps, they do make small ones. I assume you are trying to stop the water leaving the hose. If it is leaking out of the plastic connection just use pvc glue.
You really should have a slip fitting/barb for the PVC you have coming out of the water.
The barb should be matched to the inside diameter of the vinyl hose you are trying to fit.

too lazy to go out for a pic, mine isn't the same setup as yours but I think a compression coupling should also work
I used the coupling to join a 1" pvc to a flexhose for my bog filter. Seems to do a a good job and can be found at HD. I'll be spraying it black this yearWhen you get a chance can you show me yours please.
