I just realized I have a strategy that seems to work well. Will explain it tomorrow using today’s word as an example.

Ok, here’s the strategy I was referring to yesterday. Perhaps it’s obvious, but it just occurred to me.

The gist: When there are 2 or more obvious guesses you could make, choose the one that would come last alphabetically on the QWERTY keyboard.

I often find myself in situations where, after 2-3 guesses, 2-3 letters have been revealed and there are 3 or more obvious solutions, but no way to know which one will be right. It's just crossing your fingers and trying them with the hope you'll guess the right one before running out of chances.

Example: Yesterday's word was MOOSE. One my second guess, I uncovered the last 3 letters—OSE. The obvious guesses (to me) after that were GOOSE, LOOSE, MOOSE, & NOOSE. (ROOSE is also possible, but not a word I thought of until later).

Given my options, I would normally just try them in order, starting with whichever word comes first on a QWERTY keyboard. That rarely goes well for me, and I usually get it on the last try if I get it at all.

My theory is that the editors can see the patterns people tend to use to make these kinds of guesses and choose words that would be further down the list to make the game a little harder.

So, rather than following my normal guessing habit, I decided to try MOOSE first. Correct!

But wait! MOOSE isn't the last guess on my list. Well, some social hypothesizing also comes into play. Wordle is edited by NYT, and intuituion tells me they would not use that word due to its connotation. So, I discarded it as a guess, and went with MOOSE.

I think I'll start tracking my guesses a little more and see how well this strategy holds up. I'm sure it won't work every time and, if it catches on as a strategy, the editors will change their own strategy.

I know, a lot of thought for a pointless word game, but hey, gotta keep the brain sharp, and I only play during my... uh... morning "sitting time."

Fantastic approach, I'll keep it in mind. To me, the game is like a third cup of coffee -- kinda gets things up and running for the day. Strategy takes more strength than I have most mornings :)

I must have been too hopped up on cold medicine when I wrote that yesterday because M does, in fact, come after N on the keyboard. Wish I could still edit…
