If that full yellow did change then what color would it be? I am not disagreeing with anyone either. I would just be surprised if a full yellow changes. Any insight on possible color would be great.

like i said...yellow is the least stable...that doesnt mean your fish wont hold its color. until they hit 10" or so theres no guarentee on any of them holding colors, patterns.etc. some ugly ones grow out to be better looking. some that look great at 3" have patterns break up disappear, etc.. koi are only born with so many chromatasphores.
the size and density of patterns and colors can change, fade. fading and breaking of patterns usually results in the field color. or white.

Thanks for the info. I would of thought sooner then 10" for there color to be stable. Good to know. Let's say the platinum I just bought. I assume with what your saying they can also change? You gotta love this koi stuff, always so much can be learned.

Okay. I have seen my goldies lose their color in some cases. I just can't imagine what color a yellow koi will go. I believe you guys, I'm just saying how I feel. I'm too rushed to think really.

I'm quite frantic at the moment, heading for drinks at the Ritz (very posh tonight!) lol!

Dave, I FINALLY CAUGHT the white koi. That's why I'm late getting ready now, plus I'm posting on this site - lame of me! Anyways, caught the crafty guy and he's totally fine - NOTHING looked odd on him, so his injury must have healed just fine. Only problem is - he jumped out of the bucket on to my deck - :( I picked him right away and he seems fine now, I just hope he really is okay and I didn't hurt him :( He does have a deformed tail or something weird on the joint, I will post a picture tomorrow.

There are two more I want to catch, they actually look like a scale is missing - or they could be changing to white .... ? Anyways, I will work at catching them and see what's going on.

I dont think its a deformity Priscilla they often get dings in their tales when it hits the side of something when they are panicing post the photo and we'll have a look for you , if it is they nearlly always heal on their own .
However thats not important right now promise me you wont buy any of those koi until they have a clean billof health , we dont want to have to turn round and told you so

If I get them I will put them in the 10 gall tank. I don't have anything bigger to use. They are not that big right now, so I think the 10 gall tank should be fine for a few weeks while I watch them. PROMISE! 4 week minimum.

It is done.

I now own both the yellow and the white shiny (with small yellow patches). Although I think I might have picked a less yellow koi than I thought, but I was under pressure, my kids were tearing up the store. I could see that this guy MIGHT start to lighten to white a bit, as his belly looks a bit lighter. Anyways - that's what I get for shopping for kids!

Relax Dave, I have them in the small tank for the next 4 weeks. They are 4 inches or less, so they have plenty of room. The white one has some tail issues, its torn or something - the guy said it would repair itself, I hope so. But that's how it goes on a small island with only one pet shop, at least none were dead in the tank this time. For some reason their PH is at 6/6.5 or something like. Acid. I feel like the fish must be so happy to breathe in my water.

I am excited! And I like having them in a tank, I can really check them out. I tried to get a picture, but I'm feeling inadequate with RobAmy pictures around. Lol!

Your excitement is contagious! Im longing for a butterfly koi. Are you filtering the water in your tank, or just running air and doing water changes?

Is KHV only on imported koi? I heard it hasn't been found on domestic koi yet. I don't want to expose my fish to parasite or bacteria....just trying to figure out a small QT tank, if I move forward with a butterfly purchase.

Yah! Get one! So gorgeous!

Its filtered. Its just a cheap 10gal tank that comes with a filter and hood light. Not a great filter, but one of those charcoal deals. I will probably do small water changes once a week or so. I think that's the normal for this size tank and I will test the water daily until I am comfortable its steady.

I paid like $70 for the tank here, so guess its like $30 or $35 in the USA.

Dave, I know you are going to cringe, but tell me what you think. They won't sell the koi for 5 days. They are treating the koi - for what I don't know. The guy said parasites and bacteria. He says he can guarantee me they are fine to go straight in the pond. I have a 10 gall tank, I can house them in that for a few weeks. Is that the best option? They are small, like 6 inches..

Beware of keeping them in a 10 gal. tank! You'll have your work cut out for you! I had tried keeping 3 goldfish in a 20 gal. tank set up as QT, but couldn't control the ammonia at all. These guys are maybe 5" each. See my thread:

48 hours in. Small ammonia reading. Did a water change and added some beneficial bacteria (too lazy to get up to read what its called, suppose to help good bacteria form in the filter). Also added ammonia lock.

I can see what you were saying now though. Looks like a long 4 weeks! My other tank is full of fish, way over stocked (thanks to my 5 yo also a fish problem), no ammonia issues in that one, and two little koi messing up the balance in this tank already.

ps. Today is my birthday and I have a suspicion I might get at least one new fish ..... we will see ...... I said I wanted fish, flip flops and charms for my flip flops and a pasta maker. Quite the mixed bag!
