You have to factor in wind also in a waterfall .I live in VA near the NC border and may waterfall is exposed to winds and the wind blows the water all over and as it freezes the water ends up following the frozen water and finds it's way out of the pond .So my hoses get diverted to the pond only .It is not worth the risk to me .I had it happen to me the 2010 winter and if I had not caught it my fish would have frozen to death .There was maybe a foot of water and it was around 1 am in the morning with wind and snow and there I was running hoses from the basement and even from inside the house .The liner had bubbled up because all the water had rum behind the liner and i was worried it would crack the liner .A year later sure enough I had to replace the liner and last march something chewed through my liner and again had to replace the liner .It was a hard hit when liners are around 300 dollars for a 20 x25 liner in 45 mil epdm .Ce on here had the same problem happen to her
