Thanks for all the help folks - it's much better now. I did a combination of things:
- Beefed up the "lip" - this seems to be working out well
- Added water resistant coating to the rock
- Added rocks below at the bottom to catch remaining rundown

The water resistant coating is something from Home Depot (forget the name) - it seems to work well, though unfortunately I let it get into the water a fair amount as I was applying it, and it's now collected and caused a white film in the water runway. Probably fixable at some point by taking a wire brush to it or the like down the road when the pond is dry.

Here's a pic. I'll have to post more comprehensive pics in the "pond construction" thread - it's looking pretty sweet now, with plants and all. I've yet to do the rim rocks around the pond.

LOL! I think as much as you're having a love affair with that particular rock, you might have to swap it out for another. It is a cool rock though, and I can see why you admire it.

LOL

We actually were engaged at one point, but alas - it seems the rock was quite inflexible with regards to possible relocation and everything. In the end we decided it was best to just be friends.

How do you know that the protective coating is actually fish safe?

I don't really. I'm not planning to put fish in it right away - not certain that I ever will actually, though probably - if so it'll be next year, since I've got a few months' worth of work on it left this year. I'll almost certainly drain it and refill before I do put fish in it. I was assuming that the coating will be set/dried enough by then to not affect the fish. Maybe not a safe assumption?

I'll probably put some plants in it at some point too, so (with my limited knowledge) I figured that might help make it more fish-friendly, given the right care.

I would never make the assumption that just because something has cured that it's fish safe.

You can call the manufacturer and ask. Sometimes, they do know the answer.
