There are ways around that.
I know a guy that has no water source so he trucks it in. Now that's expensive.
He set up 3 tanks near his pond and to do a water change he pumps water from his pond into one and pumps the water back from the other for his water change.
When he pumps from the pond to the first tank he treats it with Potassium permanganate and after a day of purple he uses .sodium thiosulfate to stop the pp action then hydrogen peroxide to clear it.
Myself, I pump from the river into 2 500 gallon tanks and pp it for a day then use HP to stop the PP and clear the water.

It is easy to do more when it comes from a well and the only cost is pumping it.

In So Cal, we are on water rationing and there are very costly penalties for using more than what Big Brother tells us we are supposed to use. I actually got a letter spanking me for my usage once.

I hear ya on the water bill. Mine doubled since the heat wave hit. Even if the water level isn't that low, I still put the hose at the bottom of the pond just to cool the water off. I do that once a week.

I have a RO system for the saltwater tank. I am going to get a barrel for the waste water and put a pump in it to use for top offs. The rain collection is a great idea. Wouldn't of got much this year tho ..

I only top mine off when needed. After a week or ten days of very hot weather i need to add maybe 2 inches of water.
I have a bottom drain so i dont even need to drain the pond after winter to clean it and replace water. It is always circulated and clean.

I have to change my earlier statement. I change my water (about 5%) every time it rains now (lately, every other day).

My pond holds about 150g extra water from accumulated rainfall, plus 30g in my catchbin. When it's at full pond, I now flush the filter of about 150g, then top off with the bin water. I made it too easy to do, so now I do it. Makes a big difference in my clarity.

Oh, and for my roof collection, I filter the rainwater, plus use a settling basin. Petroleum distillates are not water soluble, and any collected settle out before use.

That's what I hope, anyway.

There are plenty of other pollutants in the air that bring residue to your roof. The rain dissolves some of them.
A few dollars of water is cheaper than losing all your fish. I would rather play it safe.

good information for those that might need to save their water, in arizona, water is darn expensive and I hate wasting it because of being in drought conditions for so long. All my plants in arizona are low water use plants, you get trained on not wasting water.

Here we have a well, our well is good, but we still won't do water changes. We are plumbing in our drain spouts to add fresh water when it rains. (remember no koi! in this pond)

And do you think the government would permit roofing materials to contaminate the ground and ground waters with petroleum distillates running off of billions of roofs in America?
The ground water and rivers would be flooded with the same runoff contaminates.
Possibly old roofs, (25 plus years old) may have some of that going on.

We are drinking the roof water indirectly.

So imho any fish in our pond will be safe!

Actually they do treat high quality shingles with copper, zinc and petroleum distillates to prevent algae and fungus growth. It's the black streaks you see on roofs, usually on older homes. Whether it's bad or not, I have no idea. Personally, I would not use the water off my roof. When it rains, I see all kinds of black stuff that are at the bottom of our down spouts. Plus, all the vents on the roof are sealed with roof cement. It never does set hard, don't know what chemicals are in that.
