anything i put in the top of my filter flourishes lettuce and hyacinths especially. hyacinths actually grow on tubers outside the filter with no roots

So veggie roots in a steady stream of water might not get enough air?

They would still grow but not as well. It would depend on how much of the roots were submerged. I have done it both ways and had better results with timers on my pumps to stop them. Depending on the conditions you can run them once an hour for 15-20 minutes.

I have lettuce in my slow moving creek for three weeks with no real result of growth. Doesn't look like this is going to work but plan on giving it several more weeks.

LOL!! I guess I should have clarified my comment a little better. I wasn't talking about water lettuce but regular vegtable lettuce you grow in the garden.... But thanks for the discussion about what grows better in streams because I just bought 6 plants of water lettuce to put in my pond and two hyacinth. Made one of those floating rings that koiguy has on the diy section. Working really well. Looking for a good price of parrots feather, the only place that has any around me wants $17 buck for what looks like a gallon pot.

Here are some pics of my set up from early last season. The squash had bug issues but I did get green beans and peppers.

koidaddy is that rock in the half drums and do you use this like a bog?

It is pea gravel. I do not use these as a bog, but have done a bog with the peagravel. They are on a timer that will flood and drain them. At the moment they are on 24/7 and do not have the rock in them. I am using them for my lillys. These pics are from last season. I have tried many different set ups for this and am going to stick with this method and just make it better as needed. One thing I want to work is a prefilter that removes the solids before they go into the main garden bed. The fines add up over time and leave you with pond pudding just like your filter. I might just make a settlement chamber that the water goes into first and scoop out as needed.

Not at this time. I have a seperate small pump that is just for the planters. I am going to tweak it some so my water is filtered some before it enters the planters. You would think that the muck would be good but its just a mess. The plants dont need any thing but the nutes in the water to grow, the muck is not necessary. I would not run them off a biofilter though because you would loose some of the good stuff needed for nutrients.

Check out this clip I just found. She has a pretty cool setup.

I just found that vid this morning. I have the beds already but I like her main tank/filter setup. I will try and get some pics up of my system. I actually started a thread last season here but its still a work in progress.

I am actually thinking about doing a seperate system with talapia.

where would you get tilapia from?

You can buy fry and fingerlings online.

On an earlier note I made about pest control. I stumbled across a product that is called aphid-x. It is pond safe for all birds, fish and animals. Me being cheap researched it and found that it is a garlic based product which im sure I can make myself. I am going to research more.
