I had a bullfrog show up at my pond a couple years back. He spent the Winter, but the following Spring was when I tore out my old pond and built the new one. The bullfrog actually stayed around for the entire construction, then decided to leave after I had finished.

I really wanted to get some tadpoles in my pond this year, but I am having trouble finding something suitable. I'd prefer to stay away from bullfrogs as they are considered a pest in my state. Ideally I would love to find some Northern leopard frogs, but it seems their numbers have been dwindling and I cannot find any place online that can positively identify their leopards as the Northern variety (many state they carry Southern leopards, and those will not survive the Winter here).

Does anyone have other suggestions for smallish frogs that are hardy? Something that sings would be great, but it has to be a type of frog that can actually be found for ordering online, and one that will stay around the pond rather than wandering off every year.

I will always be amazed by the way we decide something is or is not a pest; very sad.

Boy, I may be rethinking my bull frog tad purchace. Yesterday after work I opened my skimmer cover and guess what was inside? A small green frog looking to get out, boy, mother nature is surprizing at times. Grant you, like I said in my above comments, I live in an area where there are no ponds or water other than my pond, go figure.

Early this morning I was awaken by a load chirping sound around 3:00 am, because of the unseasonal temps here, I had to sleep with all my windows open and haven't installed my air conditioners yet. I thought for sure it was the green frogs mating call. Before I left for work, around 4:30 am, I went out with my flash light a saw a big toad sitting on the edge on a rock.

I don't think my neighbors would welcome any additions to the neighborhood other than what Mother Nature can provide consideing the close proximity of my pond to everyone. But than again, most have their windows shut with central air.

Boy, I just love mother natures little creatures.

David
