This is why I'm not a fan of "bogs".

If I can, got another question to add on to the list. :)

When stated "levels above 20mg/L of total suspend solids", I am not familiar with the EC test or TDS tests expressed in mg/L. Can the "total suspended solids" be found as a result of an equation with data provided by EC test or TDS test values or is it the result of a completely different test that I might be able to conduct ??

Unrelated question.... When there is heavy rains or apply a fertilizer drench on top of your Earthan beds, can this cause a compaction problem in the soil mix ??
Solids are not going to be something many are going to test or be able to test. More to point out fish do not like much of it for extended periods. The TDS recommendation is another soft number and fish species dependent. 400 is a good place to start, some speices of fish will be higher. Our EC has always run about 1200 and depends heavily on how much salt we run with 4 native species no issue even though this is much higher than 400 TDS.
The beds do compact down as which is normal for any soil garden regardless how it is built. A bit of turning and adding mulch helps keep the soil loose and build humus. The heavy rains do wash through the beds, as you would expect and makes the water quite turbid. That clears within a day and the fish are not effected by it.

This post is really interesting to me, as I just built a bog filter (contained) for my pond (also contained).

I have a dump valve on the back of it, just below the matala that I put down that is topped with coarse river rock and then pea gravel.

The pond has a light bioload - 275 gallons for the main pond and 60 gallon bog filter - 6 ryukin goldfish.

I haven't seen any problems, and the smallest fish are growing quite nicely. We have clear water, and a nice stand of algae growing on pond surfaces.
