Haro, I always blame those kind of issues when one person is using a Mac computer, and the rest of us are using "regular". I know that is not it, but it does make a difference on texting and sending e-mails. I have two siblings that have everything Mac - I Phones, too. I get this "J" symbol instead of a smiley face.

Can you see the one above that I posted John? Cuz that is the one koiguy posted above. That photo is I noticed from facebook as I rt clicked it and chose view image info. Maybe your computer blocks stuff from facebook? Sheesh I don't know maybe it is possessed................oh no could it by your MIL

OK, now you're REALLY freaking me out! I CAN'T see the picture, just the red X and IMG. Halloween's two days away, MIL was a bona-fide witch, so maybe she has put a facebook HEX on me!? What's next?
