My pond temps have been 45-50 for the last couple weeks, and my fish have been very active this week, coming out of hiding, swimming around. I've been feeding them occasionally, but since I can't find any sinking food, they were missing it at times.

I'm getting one of the new 55-gal filters established, and have a pipe running from the outlet down into the pond. I started dropping food into the filter, and the water flow is pulling the food down into the pond, shooting it right at the fish. They've come to really enjoy this, and have started congregating around the pipe in the evenings, waiting for the food to start coming down!

My water is somewhat green because we have had sun for a few days now so I have turned on the waterfall and added the hanging basket of filter floss under it. It's doing it's job and my fish are coming out of hiding big time now.

We had a few really nice days..one day it was in the 70's but the last couple of days have been in the 30's and 40's, but that is Indiana weather as always. I did get to clean my pond out a little of all the leaves and even did a small water change. I am trying to think of the cheapest way to build another pond so if anyone wants to share ideas I would love to hear them..I am overstocked on my current pond which is 1,000 gallons and instead of messing up what I worked so hard for I am thinking building another pond would make me happier and I could keep all my fish..so it would be a win win for all. My fish have been up at the top waiting for me to feed them but I am no sucker lol.

jw. Those are really pretty goldfish. I like the reddish one with the white nose. You mentioned sun. I vaguely remember what it is. We haven't seen it here in about three weeks so my memory of it is kinda hazy.

Filter floss is the white fluffy stuff that you can use in aquarium filters or to make a snow scene at Christmas time or fill a pillow with. You can use it to remove the fine dirt and algae particles by setting it under the falls and then throw it out or rinse it off and use again if you are cheap like me

addy your fish will thrive and grow in your nice big beauty of a pond sooner than you think. Mine are piggies and love to eat and I can't wait to start feeding them again. I love when they come running to me w/ their little mouths open pushing each other out of the way to be first in line :sniffles:

Sure hope so jw! I see them occasionally, I am sure more often once the pond warms up and stays warm. They hide down in the deep end. but the few times I have seen them they are bigger than they were.

It's sunny here too right now but the temp is only 43*. I do see the fish hanging around the top now tho instead of always near the bottom. Thinking about turning the pump back on soon and doing some Spring cleaning :cold:

We are about an hour south of JW, and we're getting about the same weather pattern here. Because I have the heater built into my filter intake, my pond water has been running 49 to 52 dgrees F during the day lately. My fish are extremely active and hungry, so they get fed a little each day when the water temp is above 50 degrees F.

I have six Shubunkin's and one Sarrasa that all head for the surface when I show up. One of the Shubunkin's likes to nap by a exposed water lilly root ball at the bottum, and seems to spend quite a bit time there napping. He seems to be fine, just lazy. I lost mty one and only long finned Shubunkin about four weeks ago. I went out to do my daily pond check, and I spotted him floundering like he lost his equilibrium. That afternoon he was dead. When I netted him, all of his fins fell off. I have no idea what killed him, and so on all of the rest of the fish are fine. Including the three North Carolina bull forgs that finally came out of winter hibernation.

Happy ponding,

So sorry to hear about your poor fish Rich. I know how much you love and care for your fish. I hope there is nothing wrong that could hurt your others :(
