i didnt know if this is as good as it can get or if i should shoot for better quality at this point i am going to give the batting another week then just go down to barley, uv, carbon and the regular filter and time.

alright guys now im getting a very nice hair algae plum any ideas on whats going on now? seem to be especially around the lillipad stalks

That is string algae. You can either pull it out by hand or some people use a clean toilet brush and just twist it around the brush like you would if you were eating spaghetti.
is this just a stage? or something i will have to keep doing? also could it be from the plant sticks?

Like said above lots use a new toilet brush to twist it out. I use the kitty litter clay kind to help keep it away and also barley straw and lots of plants...........to each's own.

It's the brand called Special Kitty from Wal-mart that says 100% clay on the bag w/ no additives like perfume etc. Costs only around $3. a bag for a 20 or 25lb bag............Red/Blue colored bag. Lots here use it for potting up their plants and it can help keep string algae away I've found.

does barley extract work to prohibit the growth?
It works according to the people selling it and a few people who see a decline in algae and attribute that to the barley. It doesn't work according to University studies. Seems to depend on your point of view.
the algae is so bad that daily i need to take the skimmer net out to clean it as its caked with string algae. this normal?
