String algae

Nice idea but I wonder if "hardy" would extend to New York winters. I have to put a heater in the pond just to keep an air hole open in the ice.

Yeah, probably not, though string algae would be less of an issue when its that cold. You would have to remove them to an aquarium. They are quite attractive aquarium fish, colored like the American flag. Google for more info.
