Well, EUREKA, I think I just figured it out! Was carrying on a PM session with Larkin, and while reasoning through the biological breakdown processes.....I remembered something!

A little over a month ago, I pulled about 75% [maybe more] of my plants and moved them to a make-shift bog for over-wintering. This included most of the plants I had in the "turtle bogs" and several that I had just stuck in the liner rocks. So I had effectively removed the algae's competition!

OK, I feel better, now!

It really does help to get to the "root" of the problem [yes, pun intended!]!

:) :) :) [can't access the animated ones via iPad, otherwise these little guys would be jumping ALL over the place]

When all of the string algae dies, is that going to be a problem for the water quality over the winter? There's no way I'm going to be able to get it ALL out, though I have made progress.

TM, unless there is a major water quality problem all the string algae isn't going to die off all at once. As long as you keep it in check you should be fine. This spring once the new plants are established in the bog and they start using all those nutrients the algae don't really die, they just stop growing and nature slowly takes over, fish and tadpoles will eat it, it will slowly stop growing, and as you remove it will not come back like it is doing right now.
