i figured you guys would say that, but here's my concern. next year when i do my big pond it is going to be a turtle pond. turtles have claws. i'm a little concerned they'll puncture the bottom. would do you think

I also was thinking of putting my turtles in my pond but i know not to use any sand or gravel. I'm a little concerned about it but really more so when they need to dig to find a place to stay in the winter. if i put them out there at all i would have to bring them in for the winter. So Ive pretty much decided not to put the turtles in the pond. also you have to find a way to keep them in with a fence or something or when your mowing. who knows?

i saw an article where they used sections of corrugated pipe, buried at the bottom (in the rocks!) to act as tunnels for the turtles. i guess they use them to hibernate as well as hide from predators. as long as it's in the deep end.

I can't speak for a turtle pond, but I would think you'd want to use one of those pre-formed plastic ponds. Though you'd be surprised how strong 45ml pond liner is. Even with turtles, cleaning the bottom with rocks would be a nightmare. I wish I could suggest a good turtle foum where you could get more info...but am not familiar with that world. Anybody?

You can get 60ml liner but hey it'll cost ya but it's really thick or you could double line it maybe w/ the 45ml

Dr Case, do you have a truck that comes up to Indiana? The reason I ask is that there is a truck that comes up from Arkansas with a bunch for fish.

It's already been said but stay away from rocks on the bottom. I learned the hard way. I put small river rock along the entire bottom of my pond when i built it 3 years ago. I didn't know any better back then and just did it for looks. Now it's a complete pain in the butt to clean. Im slowly removing them and cleaning while I go. It's a slow process for me becuase I don't want to take them all out at once with all the muck under them.
