It's funny that you would mention that DrDave. This pond was actually inspired by a pond at an amusement park near my home. When we visit there, my daughter wants to spend all her time looking at the pond rather than riding any of the rides. I thought it might be nice to bring that little part of it home to her and her mom.

Hey guys,

Guess what? Apparently I made another stupid mistake and went and bought a direct drive pump for my pond. It’s my understanding that these pumps are about as efficient to run as Mr. T is effeminate and girlish when he’s punching bad guys on the A-Team. Sure enough, when I look at the specs it shows that my pump is an environmentalist worst nightmare and can suck anywhere from 120 – 620 watts. YIKES! My question is, what is this MIN/MAX wattage that the documentation is speaking of and how can I make sure that I’m always running in the MIN portion of that curve? Sorry to ask another stupid question but I’ve been searching for information on how to regulate MIN/MAX wattage all evening long and I’m having no luck finding the mysterious answer to this riddle.

Thanks!

thats easy............. ready?
for maximum efficiency and Longevity of pump and plumbing.
Flows up to (GPH)/// Use AT LEAST I.D./// FLOWS up to (GPM)
240 1/2 4
480 3/4 8
750 1" 12.5
1350 1" 1/4 22.5
1950 1" 1/2 32.5
3150 2" 52.5
9000 3" 120
12000 4" 2000

So to sum it all up if your pump is 4000 @ 2ft Total dynamic head you need a 3" pipe running your waterfall. ... yes yes your pump is 1" 1/2 output just Y off at the ouput to 1" 1/2 - 1" 1/2 .

Thanks Vertigo but I'm afraid something is getting lost on me. I get that you're giving me GPH Flow then Tubing Diameter? then GPH Flow Per-Minute... but how does all of that factor into the regulation of my watts usage?

Wait a second!!!! BY GEORGE I THINK I GET IT! Are you telling me just to reduce the diameter of the flow head off the pump to lower the watts? If so... wouldn't a valve work much the same way?

Long term that's my plan. Unfortunately, I've already been using this pump so I'm stuck with it for a little while. I'm just trying to minimize the damage to my electric bill until the end of summer when I'll be able to afford a new one. I know that this sounds converse (to have increased electrical usage while waiting to buy a more efficient pump) but my wife is a college instructor and their pay cycles are all weird and frightening to budget around.

The strange part is that the watts are not consistent..
