I can tolerate spiders -- it's the random unidentified insect, arthropod, or arachnid [other than spiders -- such as scorpions] that really creep me out. Especially if it flies....wasps aren't a favorite, nor are roaches; or if is "grabs on" to you with its prickly legs.....June bugs, grasshoppers, etc.
I'm like Addy in that I try to "re-home" spiders, esp. wolf spiders. We used to have a BUG SUCKER vacuum -- it broke and have never replaced it Basically it's like a rechargable hand-vac. When you suck the "bug" up, there's an electrical zapper inside that instantly fries the bug, but also has a catch-and-release feature where you can turn the zapper part off. It was great for spiders! Hmmmm.... Wonder if they still make those.......?
What's funny is working with Boy Scouts, esp. the younger ones...... They're all into "SMASH IT" whenever they see a "bug," so we really do try hard to teach them to respect ALL of God's creatures -- Leave No Trace principles. As much as I dislike "bugs," often a boy will try to scare me with something [either a "bug" or reptile/amphibian] -- which usually ends up being something that I'm OK with [Daddy Long Legs, for example] -- and of course my reaction is, when I discover it, "Well, hello there, little fella! Whatcha doin' there? Let's get you somewhere safe!" And I'll either use my hand [depending on what it is] or a stick or something, and escort the critter to a SAFER place! Once, I heard our Scout Master tell a boy, "Now, you know Ms. Maggie's not going to be aftraid of that!" POOR KIDDOS! I rob them of their chance to scare a girl [but, a Tom-Boy!]!
