I love sitting at the pond in the morning and watching the fish, always counting to make sure all 6 are still alive. It's great to get in there and cool off on hot Sunday afternoons too. That's when I can get it in there with my wife and however many sons want to get in too. the last couple of weeks I've spent most of the time pulling hair algae but I know that won't last forever.
I'm also having a great time experimenting with plants. Zonal geraniums don't necessarily die and they do put out new flowers, but they don't thrive. I left it in its pot and just put the bottom inch or so of the pot in the water. Hopefully that way the dirt stays wet but the roots also get air. my impatiens didn't take off and flourish like they do in the youtube videos I've seen, my hostas are struggling, and the marsh marigold died, but we've had a lot of new-pond issues that may have affected that. Sweet Flag has to be in my bog - when I tried to cover the roots in gravel and have a few inches of water above them, the plant always fell over. I've got some Crushed Ice Saggitaria on the margins and one planted completely under water to see if it will grow that way like the dwarf sag I used to have in aquariums did.
I'm curious about Jungle Valisneria, amazon sword, micro sword, etc. since the water column in my pond is only 2 and a half feet deep and not in any kind of overhead shade. That's not much deeper than a 50 gallon tank so I might try some of those when I have more money. we just heard from the mechanic yesterday that our van needs over $5,000 in repairs. I'm getting to the point where I need to start selling plasma again.
