Barley breaks down and becomes peroxide and barley can be very messy and I know when I used it the first couple of days water was tea color but cleared up after a week .I never had luck with barely .I just give my filter a couple of squirts of peroxide and clean my quilt batting in a good soaking of peroxide and water .

I took the barley out, considering it wasted money. :( ($20.00). Pond is a weird mix of green and brown. Hopefully it will clear up in a few days.

barley takes awhile to start working and I think mine took about a month and just felt it was not worth the mess .

I am not too fond of the notion of using barley or straw in a pond. It is organic material and what does organic material do? It decays and produces more of the same compounds and chemicals that you are trying to elliminate from the pond water.

There may be some benefit to the compounds contained within barley straw, but there are probably much better items to utilize to achieve the same purpose which avoid the negative aspects associated with barley.

I haven't researched this barley thing in depth, but my initial gut feeling concerning its use is negative.
