You might try a small scrap of it with brine shrimp for two weeks. Rinse it, then try it.
I was with them in their testing until the part where they say they used "shubunkin goldfish (KOI)" ... uh, which was it Firestone?? 
I don't know that I would risk it - I know lots of people have, but as they get more advanced in their ability to "embed" things like mildew and fire retardants into products it may be harder or even impossible to get rid of, unlike the days of just sprinkling some kind of powder to keep it from sticking together. EVERYTHING today seems to be treated with an "anti-bacterial" promise - I bought my husband some new undershirts and had to switch brands to find something that wasn't treated.
