Has anyone tried the light-blue stuff for swamp coolers? It looks like some kind of foam-rubber sprayed onto a mat. I *think* I used this stuff once before without any problems, but I can't remember for sure. I was thinking about dropping a piece of that over the top of my scrubbie pads since I don't seem to be capturing much debris in the bottom of my barrels.

Stroppy I assume the nearest thing we have to Matala is Jap Matting, which of course is fairly expensive - I can't even google matala it keeps wanting to add a n for Matalan!!

Do the grids work OK was looking at getting a couple.

yes the grids work well and can cut quite easy with a saw, and yes Japanese matting is the closest to matala but its not as dense

The piece of batting I put on top of the filter (as a final particle filter) has all kinds of fish poo stuck in it which hasn't broken down yet. Maybe I'll just use a piece of the batting as the first-stage mechanical filter in the bottom. The problem I'm seeing is that the scrubbies drift around, so they don't completely cover the bottom grate, and some water is passing straight through into the bio media.

i had much the same problem no matter what i put on the bottom the muck kept coming through so i have an old hozelock bioforce filter, ive set that up infront of the barrel to stop anything going in there, its working great, i do have to clean it twice a week, but its small only takes 5 mins to wash 3 little foam pads in pond water, then its up and running , i have had this running for 2 weeks now... and there is no gunk in my barrel

20" x 30" x 1"

Those are the ones I ended up getting, they seem pretty good and very affordable. Our HD only carries the green ones, I found the blue at Lowes. Now I'm hoping my pond will clear up without any fish casualties:kruecken:....I'm getting obsessed with this pond stuff
