Ok... I hope to pour concrete later this week. I was not able to have a bottom drain due to neighbor's foundation ... so I have a choice of either a side drain at the bottom that would be 1.5" pvc through the concrete and to a shut off valve on the other side. If I do this will i need to seal the pvc or wrap it in something ?

Other alternative is no drain (a perfect concrete box) and to use the pump to drain it which will be submerged and piped out of the pond at the top (just under the tiles on the top of the concrete wall.

Yet another is a retrofit drain (essentially another pump i assume).

I guess the answer might depend on how often will you need to drain the pond (hopefully never).

pond will be 3 feet deep and 7 X 2.5 and will have about 6-8 goldfish. I will use a submersible pump into a pressure filter next to the pond.

Thanks!
Steve

Are you planning on leaving water in this year round? If so, you might want to think about the freeze/ thaw cycle that your area goes thru each year. Not sure on your set up, but are you going to seal the concrete so there isn't chemical leeching into the water?

hi Ryan
thanks for the reply
yes ... water in pond all year ... in DC so I don't think i need to worry about solid freeze with filter running continuously.
yes ... will seal concrete with pond paint or something similar.
question is how critical is the drain if you have a pump and pressure filter on a pond this size?

I think you concern on the freeze thaw issue was the pvc "tunnel" through the concrete???

I don't have a bottom drain on my pond. 3ft deep, 17 length , 11 wide. I have a bog filter and it does a great job keeping my pond clean.

I was worried about the concrete cracking along the edges during the winter. Most of us use a pond liner but I think a few have done concrete.
