Hi all, I have a pondxpert triple action 6000 pump in my pond, and can find no specific guidance on how often the filter should be cleaned. Does anyone have any guidance? I figured wait till the water goes murky, but concerned that may be too late!! Thank you

Welcome! Something like this? https://www.pondxpert.co.uk/tripleaction-evolve-6000/p2979 How long has it been set up?

Frequency of cleaning depends on how much debris and load your pond has. Keep an eye out for reduced water flow, which would be the first serious indicator of cleaning required if you are not going to do it on a schedule.

Main thing is to keep the biofilter active as possible by rinsing the sponge and bio filter media in the pond water. I scoop some in a bucket and squeeze and rinse the foam in that and then discard the dirty water on the garden plants.

Thank you and yes, exactly that pump.
It has been in a new pond for about 2 months with plants, and for the last 3 weeks with 7 small goldfish (now 6 after a heron visited).
I would be happier with regular cleaning but not sure how frequent is normal - monthly?? Now we’ve had to net the pond it’s not going to be so easy to access either!!

You have to be the judge with eyes on your local conditions. If the flow through your filter starts to slow, you need to give it a rinse since it is starting to clog. Some folks like to check everything on a regular basis which prevents the clogging and after a while you will figure out an appropriate interval as it is not the same for everyone. I have a finer sponge prefilter on a spitter that I rinse about once a week or it almost stops. A larger coarse sponge filter usually goes 1-2 months before a noticeable slow down.

The big thing is to NOT use tap water to clean the filter your better off just dunking and squezingbthe filter in a bucket of pond water so your bacteria in the filter stays in tack and no washed off and or wiped out by clorines
